alpha chi omega | page 12 CHAPTER ETERNAL Jean Burke Maupin '46 entered Chapter Eternal on April 14, 2020, at 94. She met her husband, Charles, at Mizzou and they were happily married for 52 years. After Jean and Chuck moved to Springfield, Illinois, she worked at the Springfield State Journal- Register as the newspaper's librarian. Jean and Chuck later moved to Columbia, Missouri, where they enjoyed retirement, golf and friends. They then returned to Kansas City. She is greatly missed by all who knew her. Gena Glaser Awerkamp '67 entered Chapter Eternal April 2, 2020, at her home with her family by her side. She passed away after a 16-year battle against stage 4 lung cancer. She married her first husband, Jimmie Trueblood, on June 7, 1968; he preceded her in death on March 9, 1978. She and her children moved to Columbia, Missouri, where she attended the University of Missouri School of Law, graduating in 1982. She practiced law in Columbia with the firm of Smith, Lewis, Beckett and Powell. On June 25, 1988, she married William Awerkamp and moved to Quincy, Illinois. She became a partner at Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell. She retired in 2007, several years after her cancer was diagnosed. Gena was an avid sports fan and loved the St. Louis Cardinals and the Mizzou Tigers. She was a proud partial owner of Awerkamp Machine Co. and loved baking treats for the employees. She was also an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Gena was a resident of Quincy at the time of her passing. ALUMNAE NEWS Eleanor Hoover Ferril '55 is hunkered down in her home "waiting for the country to get a grasp on reality." She lives in Wayzata, Minnesota. Email: elferril@aol.com Marlene Asher Harrison '57 serves on the board of Mission to Assist and Provide for Seniors and is a retired registered nurse. She lives in Encino, California. Email: maruhar@sbcglobal.net Paula Wingate Yehle '57 has been retired for several years. She is blessed with one grandson, who is a sophomore at the University of Kansas and three high school-aged granddaughters. Paula shares that the college experience now is so different from what she and her husband experienced at Mizzou (and it is certainly more expensive). She enjoys reading Alpha Nu's newsletter and hearing about all the great things happening in the chapter. Paula lives in Overland Park, Kansas. Email: pyehle@kc.rr.com Karen Eddy Smith '61 is retired and volunteers at her senior center, performing arts center and her church. She has four granddaughters, one who is in graduate school and three others in college. Her oldest daughter is an attorney in Sioux City, Iowa, and her other daughter has a career in cardiology. Karen's husband passed away seven years ago. She lives in Mound, Minnesota. Email: ksmith1941@gmail.com Mary Preston '62 shares that she and eight other women from her church make cards for residents of an assisted living home. They used to visit there frequently to do crafts, play bingo and deliver cards in person. The group would normally get together to make the cards and plan the activities, but now Mary designs the cards, makes the pieces and leaves them at church for the women to assemble. They return them to church where Mary puts them in envelopes and mails them. Recently, the group increased the number of cards they make to send to Operation Gratitude. Mary also crochets scarves for this organization and is also the president of the Ray of Hope Food Pantry board, which is open once a month to anyone who needs food. For the past eight years, the Ray of Hope Food Pantry has had clients come in and select food, but there is now a drive-up service to do that. Mary feels blessed to be able to serve her community. Email: lhahncpa@gmail.com Barbara Gisi Hellings '64 is retired and enjoys spending time with her granddaughter. She also keeps busy by sewing, including making masks at this time. Barbara lives in Lamar, Colorado. Email: bhellings44@hotmail.com Mary Ann Eggers Beahon '65 serves on the Alpha Nu House Corporation, as a board member for the Callaway County chapter of the Mizzou Alumni Association, and as district secretary for Rotary District 6080. She lives in Columbia, Missouri, close to her daughter and two young granddaughters. Email: beahon@gmail.com Janine Boals Hook '65 plays a lot of tennis and belongs to two book clubs. She is married to her second husband and her son is in Houston, Texas, working as an ultrasound tech. Janine's older grandson married a great young lady with two children and they are expecting a baby together soon. Her younger grandson is attending on-line classes for nursing. She also has two 6-year-old granddaughters. Janine lives in Ridgefield, Washington.
