Saturday, July 3, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Failure and growth What do Walt Disney, Winston Churchill, Ludwig von Beethoven, Michael Jordan and Samson all have in common? You might say that they are all famous failures. Walt Disney was fired from a ne wspaper because the edi- tor thought that he lacked imagi- nation and did not have any good ideas. Win- ston Churchill failed the sixth grade but he ev entually became the Prime Minister Frank Severs GodTalk of Great Britain and the greatest wartime leader that country has ever known. A teacher told Beethoven that he was hopeless as a com- poser. And yet, he wrote some of the world’s most famous music even after he went deaf. Although Michael Jordan played on his high school basketball team as a freshman, in his sophomore year he was cut from the roster. Finally, Samson is mentioned in the "Faith Hall of Fame" (Hebrews 11:32), even after he repeatedly failed to lead God’s people in their con- flicts with the Philistines. Samson’s rebellion and disobedience to the Lord resulted in his being taken captive by the Philistine’s. However, when Samson was blind and in a weak- ened condition as a prisoner of the Philistine’s, Judges 16:28-30 states, "…Samson called to the Lord, saying, O Lord God, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!" When Samson had his two hands stretched out and resting on the two temple pillars, this reminds me of Jesus when His two hands were stretched out and nailed to the cross. Like Sam- son, Jesus appeared to be a failure as He hung there on the cross. Just as Samson was mocked by the Philistines, Jesus was mocked and ridiculed by the Roman soldiers, by the robbers who were crucified with Him and by the Jewish religious leaders. By the world’s standards, Jesus appeared to be a failure as He hung there and died on the cross. However, in I Corinthi- ans 15:3-6a the Apostle Paul writes, "For I delivered to you first of all that which I received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day accord- ing to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once,…." Praise God for the resur- rection of Christ by the power of God! Not only can we receive the grace and forgiveness of Christ, but we can "take-a-lickin and keep-on-tickin!" That is, when life seems hopeless and we may feel like we have failed, we can cry out to God, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief" (Mark 9:24b) Another example of hopelessness and despair that had a positive outcome can be found in Exodus 19:3-6 NIV; "Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my trea- sured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." The Lord gave Moses hope and encouragement for God’s people with the illus- tration of how an eagle teaches it’s young to fly. The image of spiritual growth and maturity is the eagle carrying its young on its wings teaching the eaglets the glorious freedom of flight. At a certain stage in the development of their young, the parent eagle Courtesy photo Participants of the 2010 Presbyterian Church VBS raised money for the Heifer project. The young birds may not be anxious to leave the security of the nest, but they must learn to fly if they are going to fulfill their purpose in life. The adult birds stay near the struggling eaglets and if they fall, carry them on their strong wings until the young birds learn how to use their wings, ride the air currents, and enjoy the abilities that God gave them. Praise God for our example of a baby eagle learning to fly. Thank you Heavenly Father, for your strong wings of grace and mercy and forgiveness. Thank you, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for being our life and example as we learn to spiritually fly and ride the air currents of the Holy Spirit as we pur- pose to love God and love people. Amen. Major Frank Severs leads the Salvation Army unit for Red Bluff. His ministry is a congregation that steps up for others. Discovery Ranch North Valley Baptist Church of Red Bluff is holding a free program, "Discovery Ranch," also known as Back Yard Bible Clubs, on July 13-16. The event is for children pre-K to 5th grade, and there is no charge. All children are welcome. Events will be held in neighborhood yards to make it easier for local children to attend. There will be four locations throughout Red Bluff. The theme will be "Seeking and Finding." Teen leaders have written and produced fun skits, planned interactive games and songs. Children will create bandanas, t-shirts and decorate Fris- bees during craft periods. The Thursday session will be Get Wet Day. The final event, Friday Night Blast, will be held on Fri- day night at the church, 345 David Ave., from 6:30-9:30. All BYBC families and guests are welcome to attend. Included are games for all ages, live music, an all-you-can- eat barbecue for $3 per person and a drawing for prizes pro- vided by local businesses. In order to sign a child up for the program, call the church at 527 0543 to learn the location closest to your fam- ily. You may pre-register at that number. 9th Annual ECUADORIAN DINNER & SILENT AUCTION FUNDRAISER Sunday, July 11th 5-8 pm Proceeds will go to support the “For His Children” orphanage in Quito Ecuador Dinner Tickets Adults $15.00 Children $8.00 Couples $25.00 seating is limited Please join us and be part of this wonderful experience We will also be having a raffle for $500 Tickets available @ The Vineyard or call 527-2449, “In His Name we love His Children” Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP — 21080 Luther Rd. — Pastor J.E.
