Last year, 4,108 people in Alabama lost more than $20.5 million to cyberscams, according to the FBI's 2019 annual report on internet crime. Get the facts and protect yourself! Business Email Compromise is a scam targeting businesses working with foreign suppliers and/ or businesses regularly performing wire transfer payments. It is a sophisticated scam where email accounts are compromised through social engineering or computer intrusion techniques to steal money. Confidence/Romance Fraud happens when victims are deceived into believing they are in a romantic relationship or when they believe a family member is in trouble. e victim is then persuaded to send money, personal and financial information, or items of value to the scammer. Spoofing occurs when contact information, like a phone number, email, or website, is deliberately falsified to mislead and appears to be from a legitimate source. For example: spoofed phone numbers making mass robocalls, spoofed emails sending mass spam, and forged websites used to mislead and gather personal information. Spoofing is often used in connection with other crime types. 1 Transactions typically occur in minutes when the recipient's email address or U.S. mobile number is already enrolled with Zelle. 2 Must have a bank account in the U.S. to use Zelle. Zelle transfers may be sent from RFCU checking accounts or share savings accounts only. Must be an RFCU member to open a checking account.
