THE SKINNY Huntsville returns to the 4A-1 Conference after a 2-year stay in the 5A-West, where the Eagles didn't win a conference game. … Had e-Stem not been included among the 32 Class 5A schools in the 2020-22 reclassification cycle, Huntsville would have been the smallest school in that classification. … Watkins ran for almost 700 yards last season, including a 187-yard, four- touchdown performance against Berryville, and he returned an interception 99 yards in a game against Farmington. … May is a three-year starter at guard. … Thomas returns to start at one of the offensive tackle positions. … Johnson joined the Eagles last year after moving to Huntsville from Bentonville, and he started every game last year. … Sieber will be a three-year starter at linebacker, where he had almost 100 tackles last season. … Justin and Kolton Reynolds are both returning starters in the Eagles' secondary. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "The drop to the 4A-1 is good for us. We know this league is tough, but we're definitely looking forward to it. The 4A-1 is more fitting to us, but with that said there is a lot of tough teams. We know it's going to be ready to play and ready for a battle, but we feel good about getting back down here and playing where we really belong." — Matt Williams, Huntsville coach SCHEDULE Aug. 28 ..... THE SKINNY Doug Powell takes over as coach at Waldron after leading Class 2A Magazine to a 9-1 record in 2019. … He is the third coach in four years for the Bulldogs, who've averaged three wins the past four seasons. … Waldron scored 206 points and allowed 318 points in 10 games. …. Powell guided a Magazine team last season that scored 395 and allowed 195 points in Class 2A last season. …. Waldron has depth a quarterback with senior Braden Williams, a three-year starter, and sophomore Matthew Brigance, who guided his junior high team to a 6-3 record. . …. Williams passed for over 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns last year as a junior. He is the younger brother of Trey Williams, who led the Bulldogs to the playoffs as a quarterback in 2017. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "This is definitely a new challenge, but Waldron is a place I've always had my sights set on. If we can come in, have some success, and build the program up, I can walk away feeling like I had a part in that." — Doug Powell, Waldron coach SCHEDULE Aug. 28 ..... THE SKINNY Veteran coach Josh Jones has quietly built a winner at Lamar. The Warriors don't hope to be in the playoffs every now and then, they expect it. Jones, a Booneville grad, is 65-30 as the team's coach and 114-62 overall. … Junior Brady James ran for 1,214 yards and 19 touchdowns in a breakout sophomore season. He also caught 15 passes for 142 yards. In all, he scored 22 touchdowns in four possible ways — running, receiving, defense and special teams. … Jones expects senior receivers Justin Dillard and Mat Higby to play a more prominent role in the passing game. … Lamar will hang its hat on eight returning defensive starters, including bookend defensive ends Zuriel Barton and Trace Caldwell. Burton had 16 tackles for lost yardage last season, including a team-high eight quarterback sacks. … Three of the team's four defensive backs return, Jones noted, and the Warriors have two linebackers and both defensive ends. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "Defensively, we have about eight guys coming back, and offensively about four. Defensively, we should be pretty solid. We have an all-state running back, Brady James, that is a big help, but we have a couple of receivers, Mat Higby and Justin Dillard, who should have a bigger role this year because we might throw it a lot more." — Josh Jones, Lamar coach SCHEDULE Sept. 4 ...... at Gentry Oct. 9 ............ at Waldron* Sept. 11 .... Karnes (Jr., 6-1, 310). THE SKINNY Coach Jeremie Burns' job is simple: keep the bus on the road. The Hillbillies boast two capable running backs, a giant offensive line, and may have the best defensive player in all of 4A. … Senior Harper Faulkenberry returns at quarterback. He threw for nine scores and ran for 19 others before a season-ending injury against Malvern. After surgery for the broken leg and tendon damage, he is 100 percent healthy. … Ryker Martin subbed in for Faulkenberry late last season. He also contributed with nine rushing touchdowns and 37 tackles on defense. … Senior defensive whiz Keystan Durning led the team with 150 tackles and eight TFLs to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors by the NWA Democrat-Gazette. He also added three quarterback sacks. … Brock Burns anchors the line at left tackle. Tanner Russell will start at right tackle and R.J. Karnes will slide over to center. … Running back Tyler Sanders added 354 yards rushing in 11 games and three touchdowns. … Ozark opens the season with longtime rivals Clarksville, Booneville and Charleston before opening 4A-4 play against Dardanelle. Because Subiaco dropped to 8-man football, the Hillbillies will play a six-game conference slate. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "We lost a good group of seniors, but I think we're 7 and 7 with guys coming back. We've got some big dudes on the offensive line, including Brock Burns, who has committed to Kansas. This is probably the biggest offensive line we've ever had — they average 6-3 and 302 (pounds)." — Jeremie Burns, Ozark coach SCHEDULE Aug. 28 ..... Valley View Oct. 9 .....................
