The Deke Newsletter 3 A s the spring semester came to a premature and unsuspected end, our brothers were able to maintain the same level of distinction to which we grew accustomed to throughout the school year. Despite the current events transpiring in today's world, we have stayed connected and continued to offer support whenever need be. We now direct our sights toward the future, with high hopes for the opportunity to return to campus and plans to augment our positive impact on the community of Middletown. We were lucky to have many of our brothers receive honors and awards both for their contributions to their respective teams on the field, and for their hard work in the classroom. We're excited to congratulate Billy Mueller '20 on being awarded Phi Beta Kappa; the oldest scholastic honor society in the country. We'd also like to congratulate Sean Penney '21, who was named an Inside Lacrosse DIII Media All- American. Walker Harris '20 received the 2019-20 Joe Concannon Award (New England's Best American-born Division II-III hockey player), All-NESCAC First Team honors, and was named a Third Team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association. This makes Harris the first two-time All-American in Wesleyan men's hockey history. As we have come to know by now, a seminal element of our character as a fraternity has been the ability to adapt and respond to tough situations and circumstances that present themselves to us. Our experience with COVID- 19 has been no different, as brothers have been finding ways to make the most of their current situations. We have maintained a tight web of communication throughout the fraternity, primarily using Zoom calls and group chats to stay in touch. With the move to online instruction, we found constant communication to be imperative as it would help make the transition smoother and remind us that we are not alone during these difficult times. The future is looking quite promising as we have been preparing for the next semester with the mindset that we will be returning to campus as scheduled. During the video meeting in which we held our virtual elections, one aspect of the fraternity we all agreed could be improved on was our social media reach, which led to a revitalization of our official Gamma Phi Instagram page (@dkewesleyan). The page offers us the ability to not only show our positive impact within the community of Middletown, but also to promote any events which in turn will positively benefit our fundraising efforts. We look forward to getting back on campus to continue our philanthropic efforts with Macdonough Elementary School and the various preschools on campus. In addition to our usual efforts, we've been brainstorming new ways to further make a positive impact. A large source of influence has come from our Instagram page, which has allowed us to connect with other DKE chapters across the country and share ideas to help each other out. As the summer progresses and we begin to hear more about the fall semester, we will send updates on our plans.
