Fairfax, Virginia
The clients purchased a run-down midcentury rambler to
transform into their forever home. The space was
reconfigured with a Universal Design concept and a focus
towards going green. Interior structural and framing walls
were removed and a two-story clerestory added above the
living area to create a light-filled and airy open concept
space. The addition of a master suite and a two-car attached
garage complete the one-level dwelling. The floor plan
integrates an open living and dining area, gourmet kitchen,
three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, laundry room, patio
and two garages. Additional storage was created above the
attached garage. The Energy Star-rated home has energy-
efficient windows, appliances, mechancial systems, LED
lighting, and low-VOC paints.

The clients desired a low-maintenance
deck with a grand, wide staircase into the
backyard. Their existing narrow deck did
not span the back of the house, which
resulted in a set of French doors with no
landing space. The new deck features gray
Birch composite decking placed at a
diagonal with a picture frame border and
fortress iron handrails. The 28-foot wide
grand staircase provides easy access into
the backyard. Additional green solutions
include LED lighting, and PVC white trim at
the perimeter of the deck. Now the clients
have a well-designed and well-lit outdoor
oasis.
