2 Pi Beta P hi M argy Hunt Herbert '83 saw how much Pi Phi meant to her mother, Evelyn Byrd Hunt, Montana Alpha '58, during her initiation ceremony and has felt honored to be a part of the family's illustrious Pi Phi legacy. She will always be thankful for the lifelong enrichment she received from her mother and all the Minnesota Alpha sisters who came before her, and is dedicated to creating the same opportunities for today's Pi Phi undergraduates and future Angels. Margy gained an even greater appreciation for what her mother felt on that wonderful fall day in 1982 when Evelyn joined her at the initiation of Margy's daughter, Brianna Herbert '16. Adding a third generation of Pi Phi Pride has given the family a multitude of memories over the past four years. "During our recruitment experiences, Brianna and I both felt a sense of belonging at Minnesota Alpha," Margy said. "The sisterhood experience felt authentic and the energy and personalities of the members were both warm and inviting." Thirty-five years after Margy lived in the chapter house, Brianna lived in the same bedroom. While several things in the chapter house have changed over the years, the mutual Pi Phi Pride between their generations illustrates the strength of Minnesota Alpha. "In the '80s, the room was named 'Telephone Triple,' but more recently renamed 'Margarita,'" Margy said. "I never would have dreamed during my time at Pi Phi that I would one day have a daughter who would be sharing my Pi Phi sisterhood." Margy and Brianna are excited about more change to come at the chapter house. They're doing their part in building a bright future for Minnesota Alpha by contributing to the Our Home. Continuing the Legacy at 1109. capital campaign with a gift from the Herbert Family Foundation. "As a collegian, many of us took for granted the beauty and history of our chapter house," Margy said. "We all have fond memories of living in the house, coming to chapter meetings, preparing for social events and all- night study sessions with our sisters. Our members have evolved through the years and it is important that the chapter house evolves as well. I believe that this capital campaign and renovation will help prolong the Minnesota Alpha legacy of creating friends and leaders for life." As a member of the Minnesota Alpha House Corporation, Margy enjoys being in a position where she can serve Pi Phi by caring for the Minnesota Alpha Chapter house and the beautiful women who live in it. The relationship between Pi Phi and Margy's family extends well beyond her, Evelyn, and Brianna. "I married the brother of Paula Herbert Gamer '82, and my brother married Michelle Sinks Hunt-Graham '84," Margy said. "Brianna is fortunate to be surrounded by Pi Phis. Beyond our family Pi Phi relations, I have kept lifelong friendships with many other sisters." Just like with her mother and grandmother, Brianna's initiation set the bar high for her Pi Phi experience. And that bar has been raised many times over the past four years. "We have so much gratitude for sharing Pi Phi among three generations of our family," Brianna said. "My mom and grandmother attended my initiation and it is a memory we all cherish. We also attended the 150th Pi Beta Phi Convention in St. Louis together, which was an experience we all will remember forever." Brianna and Margy ask that you take a few moments to reflect on how Pi Phi has shaped your life. They're calling on you to pave the way for future Pi Phis to be successful at the University of Minnesota. "There are many worthy causes that people may choose to donate to," Margy acknowledged. "We feel Minnesota Alpha is deserving as well." You can connect with Margy at mcherbert@comcast.net and Brianna at herbe203@umn.edu.
