« SFE PAGE 3 THE NEED TO IMPROVE – EVALUATING OUR OPPORTUNITIES S tudent housing has drastically changed since our house was built, as have the daily habits of students. The Oregon Beta AVC leaders have been discussing the key features of the house and whether or not they meet the needs of current and future active members. We have leaned on SigEp National Housing for guidance on facility improvements that will enhance the experience for our undergraduate brothers and instill confidence in parents who are sending their sons to live in the SigEp house. 1 Recent Updates Approximately $200,000 in minor renovations have been completed in the last three years to keep the house in working order. We prioritized the remodeling of the bathrooms, flooring in all common areas, and updating the boiler and dishwasher. A portion of revenue generated from housing dues has been able to offset most of the costs for recent updates; however, we have reached the point where additional renovations will require significant capital. In 2019, the AVC commissioned a committee to develop long-term housing solutions. Step one has been gathering more feedback from leaders throughout each decade. The plumbing, wiring, windows and energy systems have received little to no attention since the house was built in 1960s. In the coming years, we will also need to update the roofs, millrace wall, and parking lots. 2 RESIDENTIAL ROOMS NEED TO BE UPDATED. Both second- and third-floor rooms have outdated furniture, flooring and lighting. Our competition is no longer just other fraternities, but rather UO dorms and off-campus housing as well. 3 THE BASEMENT PARTY AREA HAS BECOME OBSOLETE AS HAVE OTHER PUBLIC SPACES. In 2018, alcohol was not allowed in the common areas of the house. This has been done to reduce the overall liability to both members and guests. It was the first step to adhering to the substance-free housing policy enacted by SigEp National Housing. On August 1, 2020, the Oregon Beta house will move forward with a completely substance-free facility. 4 ENDOWING SCHOLARSHIPS AND LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES WILL SET US APART. Oregon Beta offers a variety of scholarships to prospective and current members, but the amounts awarded only make an impact on less than 10% of the active membership. While we have four endowments, their funding levels grant less than $5,000 per year to our members.
