Sullivan '16 A s Bill Litzler '64 prepared to pass the torch of his family-owned business to his son and daughter, he did everything in his power to ensure it was thriving prior to his retirement. C.A. Litzler Company Inc. has designed and built industrial ovens and dryers for 65 years because of the dedication Bill and has family have displayed to their customers. Bill honed a wide variety of leadership skills that he used throughout his career when he was an undergraduate member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Purdue. Just like he did with C.A. Litzler Company, Bill has helped put Indiana Beta in a position to be successful for years to come. Bill contributed to the chapter's capital campaign toward a new chapter house and is calling upon his brothers to follow suit. "Anytime you're a part of an organization, you take on a responsibility to ensure its longevity. We were young undergraduates living in a beautiful house in the early 1960s, and that was partially because of the generosity of our predecessors," Bill said. "They helped build that house to what it was. We now share in the same obligation and that's a responsibility I take very seriously." When Bill looks back on what it was like as a 19- or 20-year-old at Indiana Beta, he realizes how ΣΑΕ molded him and his brothers to be responsible for themselves, each other, and running the chapter. "There was nobody to blame if we ran out of money or food or if we didn't recruit enough members," Bill said. "I was exposed to partially being in charge with serving on the executive board. I was an officer a few different times, so I was in leadership situations and shared leadership with some very interesting guys. It was a unique experience." It hasn't been easy for Bill to return to West Lafayette very often since he lives seven hours away in Cleveland, but he enjoys how welcomed he feels whenever he has visited the chapter house. Along with supporting Indiana Beta, Bill has been very active in the Cleveland community during retirement. He volunteered as the literacy tutor for more than a decade to help high school dropouts earn their GEDs and still serves on the boards of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Clinic. "It's time consuming, but certainly very enlightening to meet and see different people," Bill said. Whether it's traveling internationally with his wife, Joyce, or visiting with his three children and eight grandchildren, spending time with family is a priority for Bill. Although his children and grandchildren didn't attend Purdue, it's important to him for ΣAE to be a top fraternity at Purdue so other people's children and grandchildren have the same opportunities that he did. "I enjoyed my time in the chapter," Bill said. "I'm proud to be an ΣΑΕ and hope I can assist others to enjoy the same lifestyle I did." You can connect with Bill at cyrilwill2@hotmail.com.
