Evening of Hope Gala to Combat Lung Cancer by ERINN CRIDER As technologies and communication abilities have progressed, Americans have become increasingly aware of the world around them. Access to so much information has not only increased the awareness of events, but has also turned the focus inward on occasion — especially when it comes to things like healthcare. Cancer is no longer a death sentence that randomly lights on an unfortunate victim, it is an uncontrolled growth of cells that can often be linked directly to certain behaviors and environmental risks like exposure to chemicals — carcinogens. Unfortunately, even with all this knowledge there is still no cure, but with increased research and awareness the instances of cancer can be influenced. Like any cause the fight against cancer requires support from the community. On May 3, the N.C. Lung Cancer Partnership will ask for support in the fight against lung cancer with the inaugural Evening of Hope Gala and Silent Auction. This event is geared specifically towards funding awareness and research for lung cancer. Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in America regardless of gender. More than 219,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer each year in America alone. Because it is so prevalent, lung cancer affects nearly every community. This equates to a staggering amount of people who are touched by the disease each year. Even more surprising is the fact that lung cancer is the least funded of all cancers when it comes to research. This trend does not need to continue. With community involvement lung cancer can be overcome, and the risks reduced. All proceeds from Evening of Hope will go to the N. C. Lung Cancer Partnership, which directly supports this goal. "Our mission is to lower the deaths caused by lung cancer through research and awareness," Heather Hooper, the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership director of operations said. Though the risks and results of lung cancer are a harsh and sobering reality, the Evening of Hope Gala will be anything but dark. "People should expect a night of fun, full of food, drinks, a DJ for dancing and the silent auction and raffle. We want the night to be fun and hopeful. Lung cancer is often overlooked, but it is one of the worst and least funded cancers," says Hooper. Tickets to this event include hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer, music and access to the silent auction and Chinese raffle. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership, but cannot attend the Evening of Hope Gala should also visit the website to donate or to find other events the organization is hosting throughout the year. Cancer is a huge risk in America today, and lung cancer kills more men and women a year than any other cancer. Sadly, there are many things that can contribute to the risk of getting lung cancer. However, there are a few things that individuals can do to reduce the persistence of lung cancer for themselves and others. One such thing is supporting research for the cure and increased awareness for prevention. Tickets are available online for purchase at www.nclungcanerpartnership. org or at the door the night of the event. Tickets are $40, and additional donations are welcome. The Evening of Hope Gala will be held at the Shriners Club in Hope Mills, 4461 Cameron Rd. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. Attendees should come in cocktail attire.
