Yergey '11 O ver the last few months, Florida Alpha has made the most of the new year as brothers strive for excellence in all areas of fraternal life. SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY Partnering with Sigma Chi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, we hosted the highly successful Sigma Barbecue fundraising project benefitting Family Promise of Gainesville. Family Promise, a faith-based charity, provides compassionate care, shelter, meals, and case management to area homeless children and their families. More than 300 guests attended the February BBQ at the house, and we raised over $1,700 for the cause. OUTSTANDING RECRUITMENT OF NEW MEMBERS Recognized by the UF administration for our new approach to Greek life, recruitment of new members far exceeded campus-wide expectations. With 18 outstanding new members recruited during UF's formal recruitment week–five above the average among all other fraternities, we could not be prouder of our recruitment team. Because we remain mindful of SigEp's 365-day recruitment plan, we added three members after the formal period. SigEp's unique Balanced Man program, our beautiful house, and reputation on campus contributed to our successful recruitment. ACADEMICALLY SUPERIOR Florida Alpha continues to succeed, primarily due to the strong dedication of members to be the best it can be. As an accredited SigEp Learning Community, the Jim Lang Memorial Learning Center has been utilized heavily this semester by students and even has helped our recruitment efforts as it makes Florida Alpha stand out among other fraternal alternatives. We've had seven straight semesters of the top GPA among the 26 UF fraternities. Unfortunately, the fall 2019 semester placed us third—just .06 behind first place, we received a cumulative 3.26 GPA. Note: Currently there are more than 2,800 members of the Interfraternity Council at UF making it the fourth largest fraternity system in the country. We are using this as motivation to work even harder this year! CAMPUS AND REGIONAL LEADERSHIP Florida Alpha was represented at the annual Carlson Leadership Academy as 30 brothers attended the Atlanta confab. Florida Alpha won three awards: Chapter Home of the Year, Outstanding Member Development Program, and brother Ryan Loveland '20 won the Frank Ruck Leadership Award. On campus we have two members of Florida Blue Key, a member of the Student Senate, and many others in leadership positions campus wide. THE FUTURE While we are not on campus anymore this school year, due to the coronavirus, we're doing our best to stay in touch with each other during this challenging time. Brothers are utilizing video chats and other digital means to check-in on each other and keep each other's spirits up. This is a difficult time for everyone, but it will make seeing each other this fall even more exciting. We hope to see our great alumni at the house this fall, too. OUR PLEDGE The brothers of Florida Alpha will continue to represent the Chapter, the alumni, the University and the community following SigEp's cardinal principles of virtue, diligence and brotherly love. We will carry out our mission of Building Balanced Men through a commitment to sound mind and body working with the University and our dedicated alumni as valued partners.
