"Leave What's Lost Behind" Colony House Roon Records Nashville quartet Colony House released their latest album "Leave What's Lost Behind" on Jan. 24. In it, the foursome stitch together a singular folklore between threads of stadium rock scope, alternative experimentation and indie spirit, making a bold statement in the process. From a three-part narrative that evokes American folklore to deeply personal tracks confronting faith, purpose and the insecurities that exist inside it all, Colony House's third album is an endeavor designed to be experienced in its entirety. "Phase" Julia Bardo Wichita Recordings Julia Bardo's musical journey began in Brescia, a small city in Northern Italy where she sang and wrote lyrics for a local band between shifts at her father's bar. After finding herself disheartened and uninspired, her next phase took her courageously to Manchester, England, where she would develop her striking, singular style as a solo musician. Her debut EP, "Phase," was released March 6 and marks a facet of this ambitious evolution, representing an artist's quest to make music that is entirely her own. "For me, music is about healing what is hurt inside of me," Bardo says. "I heal by writing and talking about what troubles me. I've always been very lonely, and I've always been very emotional — these things inform my music quite a bit." Bardo's music illustrates her constantly changing world through journal-like observations that log each trauma and triumph. "Devotion" Graveslave Trvasfuk Music Graveslave is an extreme metal band based out of the Twin Cities, combining influences both modern and classic for a visceral, crushing, ominous sound. The group released their latest EP, "Devotion," March 6. It is the first of two "sister" EPs and features five tracks of razor-sharp riffs and blindingly fast drum work, blending elements of death metal, thrash and grind. Each of the EP's tracks were inspired by the cult card game "Magic: The Gathering." Following the untimely death of vocalist and key member Don "Doombringer" Durkee in 2019, the group took a brief hiatus before they began quietly rebuilding and recu- perating. After adding new vocalist Ashton George and guitarist Joel Sigsbee, Graveslave began putting finishing touches on "Devotion," a record that now bridges two distinct eras of the band. "Industry Games" Chika Warner Records Alabama-bred, LA-based rapper/ singer/poet and activist Chika dropped her debut EP, "Industry Games," on March 13. The EP spans seven invigorating and expertly crafted melodic tracks, emphasiz- ing Chika's versatility as she paints a vivid picture of her self-made success, trials and aspirations via deft wordplay and a rapid-fire flow over hard-hitting beats. The project showcases why she's inspired wide- spread acclaim and is one of today's most influential young voices in the music industry, touching on issues affecting young artists in music and overall youth culture. Chika paved the way for the project with lyrical fireworks and a "take no prisoners" attitude on the title track "Industry Games," and elsewhere on the EP, her nimble flows, socially conscious rhymes and soulful hooks cut through. "The Women Who Raised Me" Kandace Springs Blue Note Records Kandace Springs — the sassy, jazzy, soulful, car-obsessed musician whom the late Prince once compli- mented as having "a voice that could melt snow" — has released her "powerful revelation" (Downbeat) of an album, "The Women Who Raised Me" on March 27. Inspired by a long list of legendary female musicians who have played a role in shaping Springs as both a woman and a musician, "The Women Who Raised Me" delivers "beautiful music" (Wall Street Journal) that showcases her remarkable ability to take classic songs and imbue them with her own unique style. Alongside album release, Springs also shared a new documentary where, accompanied by musicologist Marc Cary, she visits historic sites around New York with connections to some of the artists she celebrates on the album. With no live music to list, this spot will be filled by news and reviews of new albums, both local and national.
