Gengler '08 F or Lyle Pishny '73, Sigma Chi was a family affair. His cousin and older brother were both members of Sigma Chi at other institutions and encouraged Lyle to join at Kansas State. His younger brother, Norm Pishny '76, followed suit. Lyle grew up in a small Kansas farm town, so coming to a big campus in Manhattan, it was important for him to find his group. "Joining Delta Upsilon Chapter expanded my horizons and gave me many lifelong friendships," Lyle said. During his freshman year, Lyle remembers having the responsibility of waking up the actives each morning for class. "We didn't have iPhones back then," Lyle joked. "I was essentially their alarm clock every day." This could be a tedious task at times, but Lyle looks back on it fondly now. Luckily, Lyle had some help from his Big Brother, Bill Poepfer 'YR, who provided encouragement and served as a great mentor. Through his time as an active, Lyle learned how to form friendships with a diverse group of young men from different backgrounds. Lyle also served as Quaestor and was tasked with handling financials and enforced the collection of house dues from actives. After graduating from Kansas State with a bachelor of science in accounting, he went on to attend law school at Southern Methodist University and earned his master of law in taxation from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. "After attending law school in Dallas, I wanted to return to Kansas to be closer to friends and family," Lyle said. He began practicing law in Kansas and is currently a partner at Lathrop GPM. At Lathrop, Lyle is a tax attorney and does estate planning, corporate and real estate practice, and non-profit law. Lyle credits much of his current professional network to his days with Sigma Chi. "I had many friendships and connections that have led to clients over the years," Lyle said. "It was a great jumping off point when I started practicing." Because of this, Lyle has stayed involved in many ways as an alumnus. He served as alumni scholarship chairman for a while after graduation, attended Delta Upsilon's 50th and 70th anniversaries, and contributed to the capital campaign. Additionally, Lyle helped re-organize Sigma Chi's Kansas City alumni chapter, which serves brothers from any chapter living in the area. After returning to the chapter house for a brief visit to see the remodel, Lyle is proud of all the new features and notes that the house is still full of great young men. "At the end of the day it's more about the guys than the structure," Lyle said. He enjoys reconnecting with his brothers any time he returns to campus as many of them are still his best friends. Lyle and his wife, Janice, are part of a Sigma Chi dinner group that gets together frequently. Lyle and Janice have three children and live in Stilwell, Kansas. You can connect with Lyle at lyle.pishny@ lathropgpm.com. "Sigma Chi … is a great tradition founded on great principles —most of a about friendships and a we-rounded group of guys that support each other and form bonds along the way. at was important for me coming from a sma farm town. I formed a family and network on a big campus. It was a great experience and fun time!" Finding Your Family LYLE PISHNY '73 ON HOW SIGMA CHI IMPACTED HIS LIFE
