Daws said St. John's structure was among those destroyed in the fire of 1831. e rector at the time traveled north to seek aid to rebuild the church. Evans Metropolitan AME Zion Church 301 North Cool Springs Street Gothic-style twin towers represent the steeples of the church, which was first built in 1893 and is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. e church features the crasmanship of African-American artisans James Williams, a master carpenter, and Joseph Steward, a master brick layer. Henry Evans, a free, African- American shoemaker and Methodist minister, is said to have risked his life to spread the faith, at one point swimming through Cross Creek to escape a white mob. e church's towers were damaged but nevertheless still stand aer the onslaught of Hurricane Florence in 2018.
