ose days are long gone, as are many
of the stores and restaurants that we
frequented, but the memories remain.
I have never been a shopaholic like my
grandmother; my preferred activity has
always been reading, an activity that
lends itself to solitude. Perhaps that's
why online shopping appeals to me
more than the in-person variety.
However, occasionally I find it
necessary to purchase something at a
store. Finding myself in need of some
new kitchen towels, I decided to go to
a store to buy them rather than order
them online. I needed to see and feel
them, something I couldn't do sitting at
my computer.
As I entered the store, I had to
remind myself of the steps required
to purchase something in person as
opposed to pointing and clicking
online: I had to find the item I wanted,
look it over for flaws, hold it in my
hands to feel the weight and texture
of it, and then take it to a cashier to
pay for it. Like e Little Engine at
Could, I kept telling myself, "I think I
can, I think I can" as I made my way to
the check-out counter.
And I could. As I walked to my car
with my new kitchen towels, I could
have sworn I saw someone who looked
just like my grandmother, minus the
hat and gloves, smiling at me.
