Dedicated to the Men & Women of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Missouri Gamma Chapter and Named in Memory of Our Enthusiastic Brother Wilbert "Beartracks" Burton and his wife Daisy BEARTRACKS Missouri Gamma Chapter Alumni Newsletter S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N Spring 2020 T he Missouri Gamma Chapter and Alumni Board completed another successful year. The Chapter finished third in GPA among fraternities, second in new member GPA, and first overall in intramurals for the fall semester. MO Gamma had another excellent recruiting class and all nine December graduates have jobs. The Alumni Board maintained the house in like-new condition for the start of the school year and completed replacement of the attic sprinkler system during the summer. The Alumni Board had an opportunity to meet new officers, review fall goal performance, and discuss spring 2020 goals at the Chapter officer transition retreat on December 7, 2019. This is always one of our "Best Days Ever" and outgoing officers were awarded $12,125 in scholarships. THANK YOU, BROTHER ZESCH! Ray Zesch '70 stepped down as Balanced Man steward and mentor to the vice president of membership development. He served on the board and/or as Balanced Man steward since 2010 and was instrumental in moving the Chapter from the pledging model to the Balanced Man/member development model. Ray embraced the new model and worked closely with the vice president of membership development to implement the program and maintain consistency from year to year. Their efforts have made a major contribution to the success of the Chapter, winning Buchanan Cups and being awarded Learning Community status. His advice and counsel will be missed. Greg Flieg '90 has agreed to become the next Balanced Man steward. MAJORITY OF ALUMNI BOARD BACK FOR 2020 At the corporation's annual meeting on December 11, 2019, John Parks '64, Mike Hurst '74, Mike Schmidt '75, Dave Braun '79, John Welte '72, and I were reelected as directors. Dennis Stanfield '71 decided not to run for reelection. Dennis raised standards for housekeeping and was a tireless worker on the shower floor replacement, kitchen ceiling projects, and house prep and inventory days. His metallurgical expertise was instrumental in making the right decision on the attic sprinkler system. He will be missed but has promised to still help on inventory and house prep days. INAUGURAL KEARNEY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED Thanks to all who donated to the Kearney Scholarship fund and to the Ducal Crown/ Officer Scholarship program. Our goal for the Kearney Scholarship was to raise $30,000 for an endowed scholarship to be given annually to the member that contributed the most to the intramural program. We raised $25,650 with several corporate matching gifts still to be processed. On January 22, the first Kearney Scholarship was awarded to Morgan Schenck '20. A special thanks to Myron Grubaugh '78, who raised the idea of honoring Mike Kearney '61. In addition to financial contributions, the Alumni Board can always use help. Mike Hurst is looking for six to eight volunteers to take leadership roles for managing one of the house systems (electrical, plumbing, exterior, kitchen, etc.). The volunteers would familiarize themselves with the system, organize contractors for repairs and improvements, and serve as the liaison to the Housing Chairman. Mark Berger '77 and John Welte have volunteered and more are needed, please consider this opportunity and give Brother Hurst a call at (314) 369-4562. If you are interested in volunteering to help on inventory, house prep day, or to be on the Alumni Board, please contact one of us. Fraternally yours, Dave Denner '76 Alumni Board President denner@earthlink.net A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD PRESIDENT Chapter Officer Transition Retreat Provides Plenty of Optimism for MO Gamma Alumni Board Goals • Lead alumni on substance-free facility (SFF) acceptance • Support the Chapter in successful SFF implementation • Recruit additional alumni participation • Develop a long-term capital/financial plan Long-term Chapter Goals • Continue to successfully implement the SFF initiative • Graduate outstanding Balanced Men through the embodiment of SigEp principles • Finish in top three fraternities in academic performance • Maintain Chapter financial stability • Be formally recognized as an outstanding Chapter and asset to Missouri S&T • Establish a foundation for lasting brotherhood relationships • All members take individual care and respect for the Chapter House as if it were their own personal home and maintain it, so all are proud to show it to visitors
