Hay Street Named 2013 Great Places in NC! Spring Has Sprung Downtown! How Much Do You Know About Downtown? See if you know the answer to this trivia question: How many electric car charging stations are there downtown? If we did not already have a lot to celebrate about Downtown Fayetteville, here is yet another reason! The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC) awarded Hay Street as one of the seven "Great Places" named in 2013. Hay Street was selected as a "Great Main Street" by an expert panel and judged on criteria ranging from features and elements to activities and sociability to unique qualities, traits and characteristics. APA-NC President Ben Hitchings was quoted saying "All of these 'Great Main Streets' are vibrant town centers that help build community. Through this program, we celebrate some of the great places in our state and the local partnerships that have made these streets a focal point for community life." Other Great Main Streets named were Raleigh's Fayetteville Street, Davidson's Main Street, and Blowing Rock's Main Street and Elkin's Main Street (as a "Great Place in the Making). Online voters selected Union Street in downtown Concord as the People's Choice for "Great Main Street" and Clayton's Riverwood neighborhood as the People's Choice for "Great Neighborhood for Kids." JAMI SHEPPARD McLAUGHLIN, Downtown Development Manager jmclaughlin@ci.fay.nc.us www.visitdowntownfayetteville.com Join us all day on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 for a preview open house weekend in Downtown Fayetteville! Over 40 shops will be featuring new spring styles, colors and trends for 2013 and you will not want to miss it your opportunity to celebrate shopping locally. Remember for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. According to the 3/50 Project, if you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here and if you spend it online, nothing comes home. Up & Coming Weekly will also be sponsoring a scavenger hunt contest featuring Truman so check out this issue for more details! The Downtown Fayetteville Farmer's Market Opens its Season! The Downtown Fayetteville Farmers Market joined with the City Market kicked off the start of the market season on Saturday, April 6 so make sure to stop by every Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the best in local produce, farm products and handmade crafts.
