7 T he past few months for Illinois Alpha Chapter have been filled with activities and special events, beginning with the Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet at the start of the year. Since then, there have been several statistical highlights and events worth noting. Academic Accolades For spring 2019, Illinois Alpha's GPA was 3.3142, which ranked us seventh among all fraternities at the University of Illinois. Our chapter GPA dropped .01 compared to our fall 2018 of 3.3251. Four of our members received a 4.0 GPA during the spring: Jack Garibaldi '22, Wally Gulumian '21, Pat Lyman '19, and Spencer Poklop '21. The member with the most improved GPA was Luke Ingram '22. Recruitment Numbers Increase On Saturday, October 5, we had our first ever powderpuff philanthropic event at Washington Park. The event raised money for the Josh Gottheil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research. The event raised more than $400! During the fall recruitment period, Gabe Matar '22 and his committee recruited 38 new members. There was a 27% improvement in members recruited compared to fall 2018, and we recruited more members this semester than we had in the past five fall semesters. Undergraduates host another successful powder puff football philanthropic event benefitting the Josh Gottheil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research. Undergraduates Focus on Academic Achievement and Brotherhood Activities Illinois Alpha Brotherhood Gains 38 New Members 50-Something Reunion On Saturday, September 14, the 50-Something Reunion was held at the chapter house. We had an awesome time barbecuing and showing Illinois Alpha alumni the new features that have been added to the chapter house. We cannot thank you enough for supporting and fundraising our New Member Scholarship, which awards new members $350 off their dues if they earn a GPA of 3.4 or higher. Alumni Always Welcome On Saturday, November 2, we hosted a tailgate with Alpha Xi Delta for Dad's Day Weekend. For intramurals, our flag football began the season 3-0 and is moving on to the playoffs as the first-place seed! Again, we thank all alumni and Illinois Alpha friends for their continued support; we truly appreciate your help making sure everything is running smoothly. As always, please feel free to visit us at the chapter house—we would love to meet you and introduce you to the young men following in your footsteps. Fraternally, Paul McIntyre '22 Chapter President robertpaulmcintyre@gmail.com / (331) 305-0483 W hile not fortunate enough to ever know Jeff Miller '87, the impact Jeff had on the chapter was clear to Robert Garmoe '21 after listening to multiple alumni speak to Jeff's character and the scholarship named in his honor. Once joining SigEp, Robert got involved right away. He participated in philanthropic sporting events, served on the communications committee, including writing article promoting the 2018 Gottheil Cup, attended recruitment events, and joined the finance committee and served as vice president of finance. Aside from chapter activities and leadership roles, Robert enjoys one-on-one time getting to know his brothers better. "This past semester, I had the opportunity to make an impact as vice president of finance. I knew this role would be tough because of the cultural changes happening within the chapter. Many upperclassmen did not want to pay dues, had inadequate grades, and we had not been enforcing the live-in requirement in the chapter house. I knew it would be tough to keep the same events we had in past semesters due to money constraints. We had to pay insurance for 122 members even though we were realistically only going to have around 100 members pay dues. I wanted to maximize the number of events and money the executive board could use. Ethan Burrus '21 and I talked to Shawn Dalgleish '81 and together, we worked to create a proposal that was eventually accepted by AVC allowing the chapter to save around $5,500 on the insurance bill. This was huge for the chapter because it allowed members to continue enjoying the same events we have had in the past, even though we were dealing with declining membership," Robert said. Outside of SigEp, Robert is involved in club golf with Chris Tate '19 and Tommy Dale '19 and the accounting club serving as the social chairman and marketing chairman.
