e Serpent 2 A Life of Teamwork and Service Pat Hatfield '78 (BZ1231) Thankful for Sigma Nu Influence I n his new role as president of the House Corporation, Pat Hatfield '78 (BZ1231) brings a lifetime of service and devotion to Beta Zeta. "My first introduction to Sigma Nu was a high school recruitment event and it made a very positive impact," he recalls. "I had a close group of terrific friends in high school, but it was clear that my new brothers would be great role models and influencers for the next stage of life." anks to Sigma Nu's positive environment, Pat became active in campus activities, student government, and local politics, and started out on a solid path for a fulfilling life. About four years ago, Pat sat on a conference call listening to problems with the active chapter. "After several of these calls, I had heard enough of my own griping from the sideline. I volunteered to join a small group of brothers to act: to visit the house and meet with the undergraduate leadership to mentor them into better self-governance." at group became the Alumni Advisory Board, on which Pat served as chairman. "ose of us on the board heard the call: 'If not me, who? If not now, when, and why not now?'" Pat intends to bring that same energy to the House Corporation. Pat graduated in 1981 with a political science degree, followed by an MBA and law degree from Indiana University. For 30 years, his law practice has focused on IT, technology, and outsourcing, helping companies across the country as well as software company acquisitions and joint ventures worldwide. Pat attributes much of his professional success to working with diverse teams from different disciplines and perspectives—a skill he learned from Sigma Nu. Although he didn't hold offices as an undergraduate, he was commonly an active participant in discussions and activities. In the years since graduation, Pat has remained close with several of his era brothers. "My big brother, Greg Miller '77 (BZ1211), and I have kept in touch since graduation; we've experienced a lot over the decades." Pat makes a point to look his brothers up during his travels with the hope of catching up, even if only briefly. "e bond with my chosen brothers has been one of the best surprises of my life. It's a treasure to have that connection with truly impressive men." Pat lives in Austin, Texas, where he enjoys good music and the great outdoors. He has summited several mountains, most recently Mt. Rainier. Connect with Pat at phatfield@lockelord.com. His transition into Beta Zeta alumni involvement began in just the last few years. When he received the 2015 letter regarding Beta Zeta's suspension, he was stunned. "I had not been involved with Beta Zeta for decades… I decided that this was a good opportunity to give back to Beta Zeta after all I had received from my fraternity experience," Jeff said. is realization led Jeff to take action and get involved. He volunteered to lead the recolonization and join the Alumni Advisory Board. Jeff drives up to Purdue several times a month throughout most of the academic year to meet with the colony. "We have some great guys—guys with the right values who are willing to work hard to improve. I feel really good about Beta Zeta's future. ey are trying to build a fraternity and progress to being a top one at Purdue. is is really very similar to what we were trying to do during my years at Beta Zeta," Jeff said. Jeff was fortunate to see changes in his undergraduate years up close as a leader when he was "narrowly elected" as commander his sophomore year. He was encouraged by his brothers to run after they agreed they needed to change the direction of Sigma Nu. "I was very fortunate to get the experience of being commander early during my time at Purdue. In my junior and senior years, I had the chance to be in other campus leadership roles with IFC and then president of Gimlet Leadership Honorary," Jeff said. Jeff credits those leadership roles for playing a major part in his future, including his acceptance into Harvard's MBA program. He even used his experiences as commander of Beta Zeta for a crucial entrance essay. After Harvard, he joined Eli Lilly and Company and had a 30-year career in leadership positions in the United States, Asia, and Europe. You can reach Jeff at jeff.j.hollings@gmail.com.
