Ties to Tau page 2 A iding those who are blind or visually impaired has been Delta Gamma's philanthropy since 1936. Alongside nine Delta Gamma sisters, Lauren Delzell '12 proudly joined the Fraternity's first Hope Serving: Service-Learning Experience trip outside of North America. Beyond continuing Delta Gamma's mission to "Do Good," Lauren had the unique opportunity to give back on an international level. Hope Serving: Service-Learning Experience offers Delta Gammas the chance to develop as leaders through hands-on service, community involvement, civic and social justice education, with a focus on developing a more personal connection with the Fraternity's philanthropy, Service for Sight. Traveling to Morocco, Lauren and fellow ΔΓs worked alongside the staff of the Abu Abbas Sabti Center for the visually impaired, helping renovate the center's buildings. "Hope Serving taught me about my role as a global citizen," Lauren explained, "and my responsibility to see the world to learn about what makes each of us different, and more importantly, what makes each of us the same." It's safe to say this was a truly transformative experience for Lauren. "Serving at a center for students who are blind and visually impaired across the world in Morocco with Delta Gamma sisters from different countries and generations was more rewarding that I could have ever imagined," she shared. Lauren plans to use what she learned from this experience to break down barriers and stereotypes targeting Moroccans, Muslims, and people who are blind or visually impaired. Beyond making a global impact, doing good on a local level also remains important to Lauren. She's served as Tau Chapter's membership adviser since 2017. Working with active members to plan and implement successful recruitment methods, Laurens helps them welcome new members to the Chapter and continue Tau's legacy. Many of the recruitment strategies that Lauren recommends today come from her first interactions with Tau as a sophomore transfer. "Delta Gamma stood out to me as a Chapter of diverse, authentic women," Lauren said. "Their values of friendship, educational and cultural interests, character, and social responsibility embodied the type of woman I wanted to be." After graduating from nursing school at Trinity College in 2017, Lauren moved back to Iowa City to work at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in their pediatric intensive care unit.
