a new era for beta upsilon
W
hile we are certainly proud of our historic achievements,
Beta Upsilon has experienced trying times. In June 2011,
the decision was made to close the Chapter after conversations
with alumni leaders, MIT, and the General Fraternity.
With the support of MIT and the backing of the General Fraternity,
our Beta Upsilon Chapter will re-open in spring 2013. This return
of BQP at MIT will be a journey of parallel paths: excellence in
both membership selection and in facility enhancements.
Membership Selection
In summer 2012, a full-time expansion coordina-
tor will arrive on campus to live in the house. He
will use fall 2012 as an opportunity to introduce
the Men of Principle initiative and network with
campus leaders. In spring 2013 the founding fa-
thers will be selected, initiated into Beta Upsilon,
and will attend Campus Preview Weekend to in-
teract with incoming freshmen. In fall 2013 Beta
will move into the Chapter house at 119 Bay Street Road and par-
ticipate in recruitment. The commitment from the General Frater-
nity is to recruit men who will lead the new Beta Upsilon with
pride, purpose, and vision. Our goal is to recruit Men of Principle.
Facility Enhancements
The second path is a commitment to returning to our properties
on Bay Street Road and providing premier living and learning fa-
cilities for our future Brothers. Over the past two years, a dedi-
cated group of Beta Upsilon alumni leaders has
been researching approaches to renovate our his-
toric homes. The location and subsequent reno-
vations are key components of our ability to
recruit and retain the caliber of men capable of
carrying on the Beta Theta Pi legacy. A competi-
tive housing environment, in terms of technology
and the lifestyle requirements of today's student,
is essential to our long-term success in the Greek
marketplace.
