Make Your Contribution Online A CHAMPION FOR MOTHERS Crest Award Winner Connell Sullivan Branan '86 Makes Cal Gamma Proud A s a member of Pi Beta Phi, it's fitting Connell Sullivan Branan '86 has devoted her adult life to being a champion for mothers. Through her work with American Mothers, Inc., Connell gives a voice to issues impacting mothers and children, something all members of Pi Beta Phi should be proud of. American Mothers, Inc., is a national nonprofit giving mothers a powerful voice across the country through the Mother of the Yearâ„¢ award and by awarding grants to 501(c)(3) organizations helping mothers and children in need. Winner of the National Young Mother of the Yearâ„¢ in 2006, Connell now serves as president of their board of directors and is especially excited about their work raising awareness for human trafficking. "Working for an organization that values and supports mothers has been an extremely rewarding experience and provided me with a network of inspirational women and friends across the country. One of the highlights of this journey has been attending the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. Learning from women around the world about the issues which impact them in their role as mothers has been a fascinating experience across the board." Her work with American Mothers, Inc., was noticed by Pi Beta Phi, and Connell was awarded the 2018 Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award at Convention 2019. "I remember meeting Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg in college and aspiring to be like those women honored in her name," Connell said. "Honestly, receiving this award for doing something I love (working with other mothers) is truly humbling and reminds me I am not as young as I would like to think I am." Connell is a third-generation Pi Phi, following her mother and grandmother who were Oklahoma Beta members. Her daughter, Langley, is a sophomore living in the Oklahoma Beta chapter house. "I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to join Pi Phi at USC. What a special place with amazing women. Meeting the active Cal Gammas at convention this summer only confirmed that not much has changed and we're still a top house on the row!" Looking to the future, Connell read that after age 50 women are re-inventing themselves and starting new careers. "Guess it's time I start writing that book on mothers in America that I have long thought about." Wherever the future takes Connell, she will be a shining example of a Pi Beta Phi enriching lives through community service. All California Gammas can be proud to call you their sister, Connell. Connell lives in Oklahoma City with her husband, Cliff, and their two adult children, Ford and Langley. Reach her at cbranan@cox.net.
