PAGE 2 TAU TALK "He was an assistant house manager and helped with the food. One time he and another brother went crow hunting. They were actually looking for deer, but there were no deer and a lot a crows," Mary Elizabeth said. "They got the cook to make a nice brown gravy and they told the boys that it was chicken. The boys loved it, but they never told the chapter members. That was one of their pranks. ATΩ meant a lot to him." Mary Elizabeth and Al shared 69 years of marriage. Al enjoyed spending time with Mary Elizabeth and their three children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson. "He had a highly productive and happy life," Mary Elizabeth said. (Continued from page 1) F or many college graduates, the saying 'when one chapter closes, another begins' rings true. Chris Diaguila '17 is excited to begin his new chapter at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis this fall, but his Iowa State undergraduate experience isn't a chapter that he ever plans on completely closing. Along with being a proud Cyclone, Chris will carry the core values of Alpha Tau Omega in each chapter of his life. The profound impact that Chris made on Gamma Upsilon Chapter as an undergraduate member did not go unnoticed by the ATΩ National Fraternity. On August 10, 2019, Chris was recognized as the 2018- 19 winner of the Thomas Arkle Clark Award, which goes to the top ATΩ undergraduate member in the nation. Chris is the first member in Gamma Upsilon's history to receive the national award. "Winning this award means so much to me, but for a variety of reasons. It feels great to be recognized for my efforts within Gamma Upsilon Chapter and the Iowa State community, and for Alpha Tau Omega on a national level," Chris said. "However, it means even more to me knowing that current and future members of Gamma Upsilon can now realize that awards like this are achievable with dedication to not only Alpha Tau Omega, but to seeking excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and the personal qualities of character, integrity, and responsibility." While the Thomas Arkle Clark Award is an individual honor, Chris claims that he could not have won it without the support of his brothers. Chris has been no stranger to accepting awards for Gamma Upsilon. During Chris' term as worthy master, he accepted Gamma Upsilon's third consecutive, and 20th overall, True Merit Bowl at ATΩ's 83rd Biennial Congress and was named the 2018 Iowa State Interfraternity Council President of the Year. "The term 'it takes a village' is exemplified perfectly in Gamma Upsilon Chapter because everyone is truly there for one another and for Alpha Tau Omega," Chris said. "Gamma Upsilon Chapter is one of the most special chapters of Alpha Tau Omega in the nation and continues to lead the way in redefining what it means to be a fraternity in today's society." After Chris graduated in the spring, he moved to Boston for the summer for an internship with Latham & Watkins, LLP, the second largest international law firm in the world. Chris plans on focusing his legal studies to the fields of entertainment, sports, and media law, which include but are not limited to, intellectual property law, contract law, trademark law, and complex mergers and acquisitions. He hopes to either work for Latham & Watkins in their corporate entertainment, sports, and media practice, or as an attorney for a professional sports team or athlete. "It's been an amazing experience," Chris said. "Being able to work for such a prestigious law firm before I even begin law school is something that not many others can say they've done. I look forward to applying my knowledge, experiences, and connections gained from this internship to my experiences during and beyond law school." Al Hausrath '42 Remembered for Aerospace Accomplishments T his past summer was quite the eventful one for Gamma Upsilon, as our chapter brought home its fourth consecutive True Merit Bowl. It was our 21st overall and our chapter was just one of the 24 chapters to take home this prestigious award. In addition, our chapter earned excellence awards in recruitment, impact, and scholarship. But the biggest award of them all went to Chris Diaguila '17, Gamma Upsilon's first Thomas Arkle Clark award winner. Incentives Implemented for Academic Success Our chapter earned a 3.08 GPA during the spring 2019 semester, which is a .03 improvement from last fall. These results are strong, but we want to improve on them. To do so, we are implementing a new and improved model for incentivizing strong academic performance with a gift card giveaway for deserving members, such as those who earned 4.0s and those who showed the most improvement.
