6A Daily News Wednesday, March 27, 2013 Commerce business&enterprise S&P nears record Save a Life, Giving Platelets Fountain of Health, 1415 Solano St. in Corning, will be opening its doors the second and fourth Saturday of the month to BloodSource to receive platelets from those who are willing to donate this life-saving component. If you have successfully given whole blood and weigh at least 150 pounds you may try giving platelets. The need for platelets continues to rise as our population ages. Did you know that platelets last only five days? The body replenishes platelets within a few days, allowing donors to give more often than every eight weeks. Platelets are collected through an automated collection process, where the platelet component is separated from the rest of your blood. The remaining components are returned to your body. To become a platelet donor you will be asked during your whole blood donation if it is OK to collect an additional tube of blood that will be checked in a laboratory. BloodSource will let you know if your platelet count is high enough to be a platelet donor. If not, you can still give as you have in the past. Who needs platelets? Trauma victims, transplant recipients, and cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy or radiation, need platelets to survive. For more information call 800-995-4420 or visit www.bloodsource.org. Good Friday Harvest Christian Center will have an evening Good Friday service at 7 p.m. Friday.
