They all wanted, what we all want: serious, honest, insight into general local issues, projects and venues concerning the Fayetteville/ Cumberland County community. Truth and facts are probably the two most elusive things to nd here in this community. This is unfortunate since these missing virtues impede progress in moving our community forward into the 21st century. Sure, we have made some progress in the last 10-15 years yet, we are no where close to where we should be for a progressive community of 300,000 plus. This is especially hard to understand when you take into account the considerable talent, diversity and intellectual resources at our disposal. Simply stated, when it comes to understanding the issues of our community we spend way too much time trying to uncover the basic facts and truth about these issues. The matter is complicated by special interests groups (and even individuals) who see the benet in clouding the issues. These spin masters, power brokers and deal makers lurk in the shadows of the back rooms of government ofces, pulling strings and assuring us of three things: The publics best interest will not be served, their interest will be served and in the end, the wrong decisions will be made. This is a sad but true scenario that hinders growth and cripples projects, initiatives and progress at all levels. Truth and knowledge is power. But, seeking out the truth is never easy and withholding vital information and distorting the facts are two common practices in Fayetteville and Cumberland County and mostly without consequence. So is the practice of running rabbits, which is the intentional act of creating false and needless distractions with the intentional purpose of misleading and confusing the public. This is extremely frustrating to citizens trying to understand local issues, contribute to the process and make sense of decisions local governmental leaders are making. Especially, when many of these decisions affect their workplace, home and family. Not to mention the taxpayers are paying for the privilege. So, dont get frustrated or confused when something just doesnt make sense to you. Just assume you dont have all the facts and try to get to the truth. As a community newspaper, Up & Coming Weeklys agenda has always been focused on discussing issues based on the truth and facts as we know them. Connecting the dots, so to speak, is a full-time job but the only way our readers can gain insights into important community issues. And, they appreciate it. Trust and honesty is the foundation of progress and success. Our editors, staff writers and contributing writers all write their editorials, features and opinions in the rst person. They are responsible for their positions and accessible to the public. So, I hope these conversations we are having with the community continue for a very long time. No one comes to us expecting anything less than the facts and truth. Helping our community connect the dots is what we do and we love what we do.
