Nellie Williams Miller, Cottonwood, is featured on a bottle of ���Barrel Racer Red,��� a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Petite Sirah wines from the Tehama Oaks Winery in Red Bluff. The wine will be released on April 14, in honor of the Red Bluff Round-Up. Miller, a barrel racer, gained notoriety in the rodeo world when she finished the 2010 season seventh in the world standings. She has competed at the Red Bluff Round-Up five times, winning money there several of those years. This will be the first time in more than years that Nellie won't be in Red Bluff for the Round-Up. When she was a child, it was a family tradition to attend, and she competed there as an adult, but now lives in Tennessee with her husband and daughter. Nellie, who graduated from West Valley High School in Cottonwood in 2006, competed in high school rodeo and college rodeo. After college, she became a professional barrel racer, running at rodeos across the nation, including the Round-Up. The Round-Up was always special to her. ���It���s a really neat rodeo, and I know everybody there,��� Miller said. ���It���s a hometown thing.��� But running barrels at Red Bluff in front of friends and family could come with pressure, too. ���It���s a little intimidating because you want to do good, and everybody you know is watching you,��� she said. ���But I think it���s fun.��� Nellie, her husband James Miller, and nine month old daughter live near Knoxville, Tenn., and own their own saddle company. But she'll be sure she owns a couple of bottles of wine with her picture on them. She likes wine, but not always merlot. ���I usually drink whites, but I might learn to like merlot,��� she said. ���I'm definitely going to try it.��� Tehama Oaks Winery will host a Wild West Release Party on April 14 at the Winery from 1-5 p.m., and the winery will be open for tasting from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, April 15-19. The wines will also be poured at the Bikini Barrel Race on April 17. The Barrel Racer Red wine is the second in a series of wines released for the Red Bluff Round-Up. Last year, ���Red Rock Red,��� with a picture of the 1987 World Champion Bucking Bull Red Rock was released. PAL wrestling and boxing in Corning Special to the DN Luis Hernandez made a presentation at the March meeting of the Tehama County Police Activities League Board of Directors at the M and M Restaurant in Red Bluff on March 21. His presentation was on the PAL Wrestling and Boxing programs now being offered in Corning. He also presented a photo of the wrestling team (top), including from the girls team. One of those girls competed in the state finals recently, Baylie Battiato (right), who at 70 pounds won her weight class for state champion. There are a lot of supporters in Corning who are supporting the efforts of Hernandez and the other coaches in these programs.
