p. 4 TEXAS ALPHA ACCOLADE T exas Alpha just completed our summer recruitment and have 51 new members among us who hail from Texas and beyond. While we started the semester beating Georgia, we finished the spring 2019 semester with a GPA of 3.343, which is higher than the IFC, all-men, and all-undergraduate GPAs. We had a full semester of social events with speakers, including athletic director Chris Del Conte, MBA faculty member Daniel Lui, and Texas Economic Development Corporation President and Texas Alpha alumnus Robert Allen '01. We started the semester with our officer strategic planning retreat at the UT Club, followed by the SigEp Carlson Leadership Academy in Irving, Texas. We had an incredible Founders' Day banquet where we honored brother Jeff Otto '77. We also participated in National's Conclave in Houston in July. This semester also brought about Texas Alpha's inaugural SigEp Learning Communities program. We now have a dedicated study space in the chapter house and have partnered with UT's Associate Vice President/Senior Associate Dean of Students Doug Garrard as our first Faculty Fellow. Dr. Garrard has been a great addition to our regular Friday alumni/EC lunches and is working with the young men on a variety of matters. We hope to strengthen the chapter's relationship with the university by building on our relationship with Dr. Garrard. Every Friday, as many as five to six alumni meet for lunch at the house at 2500 Pearl with the officers. We spend an hour or so going over the prior week's activities, the chapter's membership and finances, as well as the events in the coming week. If you are interested in attending, please feel free to join us any time. While we regularly send out letters regarding membership in the Skull & Crossbones Society, I want to tell you why. We use every dollar to pay for the leaders in the chapter to attend the Carlson Leadership Academy, the Ruck Leadership Institute, and, every other year, the National Conclave. We believe it is important that the active chapter understand members of Texas Alpha are part of a larger brotherhood that shares the same values and goals in life. Officers and younger members who express a desire to be the future leaders of the chapter have attended. Your support is vital; please help if you can. Also, please let us know of any young man coming to Texas that we need to recruit. You can reach out to me or any of the AVC or officers and we'll follow up. Finally, I had the privilege of seeing my own son graduate from UT and Texas Alpha this spring. I got to see his progression alongside his brothers' over the last four years and it has cemented my belief that what we do at 2500 Pearl matters. It has mattered for generations and decades and it matters now. While nationally fraternities are experiencing a dark period of bad behavior and bad news, Texas Alpha stands strong as what a fraternity is supposed to be. We help develop strong Texas men that will be leaders for the future.
