boxes being given away at the food bank included fresh apples and plums, a
5-pound frozen pork roast, a 2-pound box of frozen pork patties, two gallons
of milk, a dozen eggs, a pound of cheddar cheese, a jug of juice, cans of food,
bags of rice and beans and boxes of macaroni and cheese.
e distribution portion of the Second Saturday events runs from 9 to
11 a.m. and a smaller distribution is always held the same day at a satellite
location – generally, a church.
Preparing for the distribution takes much longer and, as with much of the
food bank's work, is accomplished with the help of volunteers. Several dozen
volunteers were on hand for the Second Saturday event in September, fetching
food from the warehouse, packing it into boxes and bags, rolling it in carts
from one place to the next, talking to the people lining up for the food and
placing the boxes into their vehicles.
"Volunteers give us so much help all the time," Phillip said. "Not just on
Second Saturday."
