Discove r Cit yV iewN C.co m's fre s h up d ate d loo k ! | 39 people in need, said Cortez Phillip, the food bank's interim director. Second Saturday, joined in some months by Second Friday and other such dates, has provided that answer. "is summer we have been blessed with a lot of food," Phillip said. "We've been able to help so many people." Cortez said she believes the Second Saturday distributions will likely continue at least through next spring. Second Harvest's region includes the counties of Cumberland, Bladen, Duplin, Harnett, Hoke, Robeson and Sampson. One of every six people in that area is hungry, according to the food bank. Of those hungry people, one of every four is a child. e 35-year-old food bank accepts donations of food from a variety of sources, including major retailers, local wholesalers and warehouses, other food bank, and food drives held by individuals, businesses, schools and other civic organizations. Some food is provided through government programs while other food, including fresh produce from small local farms, is purchased. e vast majority of Second Harvest's food goes to partner organizations that are qualified charities, including smaller food banks, soup kitchens and emergency shelters. e partner agencies have to be able to store the food properly and no one wants to take more perishable items than can be used or given away before they go bad. "is is surplus from agencies that didn't accept it," Phillip said. Perishables drive the Second Saturday program although items like frozen meats and shelf-stable foods are added to the mix to provide a more complete and useful set of grocery items for those who take the boxes.
