The Ides of March and music too "The higher the quality of your work, the more necessary it is that you approach it only when you are at your best. This is especially true of intellectual effort. You can tell when you read a story or an article whether it is tainted with exhaustion; it is dull, lifeless putty." Dr. Frank Crane, 1919." If indeed my column is coming across dull and lifeless this week, I will have to own up to not being at my best. With the arrival of spring weather, the blooming of tree blossoms entered into my "allergy season." I thought that I might escape the sniffles this year. It doesn't seem likely however I can try to hide out. The old stuffed-up head and sneeze route has set in on me. I feel as if I am running on "half power." The attack of the blossoms reminds me that I experience very few allergy symptoms when I am in the mountains. I am not even allergic to the fine, green cedar pollen that often covers our deck in the high altitude. Friends keep assuring me that this current misery shall pass. In the meantime, I will have to deal with a lot of throat clearing, nose blowing and eye watering or eye drying whichever attacks me. An acquaintance once said to me, you are just suffering the "Ides of March," I was at loss for an answer because to tell the truth, I did not know what the Ides of March was. PAL jumped on this immediately because it is a community service. These classes started at the end of January 2013 and are held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays but will go a little longer if requested. The PAL Martial Arts Center for Excellence is located at 1005 Vista Way, Suite C, next to the Red Bluff Airport. Please park past the two businesses located at Suites A and B. It's too important to charge anyone for this. Alternatives to Violence and the Police Activities League urge those who feel vulnerable to violence to come and check out the classes. Just watch for a while and decide whether or not you want to experience empowerment, free of charge. You won't need any special equipment or special clothing, just the will to survive in a society that is becoming more violent. But let's just say what we offer isn't enough for you. There are other options. You can pay for the extra training if that's the way you want to go. We're available to those who just simply can not afford it. When checking out any instructors look for some things you like about them and what they offer. Also, don't be afraid to ask about them. Ask them about their backgrounds and ask others about them, too. Ask law enforcement agencies about them. Ultimately, it is your choice on whether or not any empowerment training is for you and if you choose to get some of this training choose who you want to get it from. The PAL Martial Arts Program will be 15 years old this summer and a party is being planned to celebrate it. The party will be free but pot luck is going to be highly recommended. Come and see our photos of the thirtyone students who have achieved black belt grading. Current students will perform Judo and Jujutsu techniques being taught. Staying fit and healthy is an important aspect of their training. Suggested gifts for the celebration party may include old carpet remnants, paint for a make over, Wi-Fi for webinars from the US Department of Justice, always in need of more and more support from the community and parents. Come and meet some of the best parents we've ever had. But we've had some great ones over fifteen years. A lot of dads and moms, grandparents and others have donated lots of time, energy and love to the program. But more is always needed to continue.
