6A Daily News – Thursday, March 14, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Stohler named Artist of the Month Retired primary school teacher and long-time member Betty Stohler is Red Bluff Art Association's March Artist of the Month. President, Connie Maxey states, "Betty is gifted in many areas and we are very delighted to share her with our community." Betty knew from an early age that she had a passion for art. She and her sister would buy watercolor paints, color pencils and clay. Even in college she was drawn to art classes. Here she especially enjoyed creating creatures in clay. Over a career of 30 years, Betty taught Kindergarten through 3rd grades. She found that art was often a means of encouraging students. Betty says that it was especially rewarding to give a child a chance to create something beautiful and recognize that they could have success. She would try to display those parts of their work which were most eye-catching. Betty's favorite painters are Norman Rockwell, "the great artist commentator of the past," and Claude Monet, as well--known in particular for his painting, "Terrace at Sainte Addresse," on the English Channel. She has taken a number of workshops and classes including oil painting at the Orland High School extension program. Her happiest art experiences were when she sat by her son's crib as he napped, watching his facial expressions and capturing that moment in color pencil drawings. It was Barbara Luzzadder, a close personal friend, who encouraged Betty to join RBAA. At that time everyone was encouraged to join a committee. Betty volunteered to serve in the library only to find the books were stacked on the floor in the closet in no particular order. She spent two years organizing and cataloguing. Betty states that it was especially interesting for her to be able to peruse all the books to determine how to code them. She used an adhesive "dot" on the back of each book with a different color indicating a different art genre. As a side note, Betty says that after completing this project, she noticed that there were stacks of books piled on shelves at another local organization. She then volunteered to categorize those as well. Betty states, "I'm delighted to be in the fellowship of such gifted artists." RBAA, bringing art opportunities, education and enrichment to the North Valley, meets morning and afternoon, Thursdays, at the Snug Harbor Mobile Home Park Recreation Room, 600 Rio Vista Ave. in Red Bluff.
