Dedicated to the Men & Women of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Missouri Gamma Chapter and Named in Memory of Our Enthusiastic Brother Wilbert "Beartracks" Burton and his wife Daisy BEARTRACKS Missouri Gamma Chapter Alumni Newsletter S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N Summer 2019 C ongratulations to the undergraduate Chapter for their great performance during the Spring 2019 semester. You'll see details in the following pages regarding GPA, officer scholarships and intramurals and the recent electronic Beartracks listed new graduates. The Chapter finished first in GPA and intramurals among fraternities, a first in the history of MSM/UMR/MO S&T per Brother Mike Kearney '61. On May 4, the spring officer retreat and transition was held to review outgoing officer goals achieved and incoming officer goals set for next semester, award scholarships, and, perhaps most importantly, provide a structured opportunity for new officers to spend time with their predecessors. With more than 150% turnover of officers on an annual basis, it is crucial for new officers to build upon past successes to improve the Chapter each semester. Additionally, $8,710 in scholarships was awarded at the retreat. Thank you for your contributions to the Ducal Crown and Missouri Gamma Scholarship funds, which help make these awards possible. On May 29, Mike Hurst '74 and Mike Schmidt '75 led a group of alumni in taking inventory at the house and assessing the condition of rooms and common spaces. This is an essential part of ensuring that the house is in "like new" condition every fall when new members move in. This summer, we made repairs, stripped and waxed the floors, painted where needed, and replaced broken furniture. The biggest project this summer was replacing the dry pipe fire extinguishing system in the attic at a cost of $62,900. This system was original to the house and severely corroded pipes posed the risk of a failure and corrosion residue in the piping had the potential to block sprinkler heads if there was a fire. Thanks to Dennis Stanfield '71 for diagnosing the pipe issues, and to Dennis and Mike H. for identifying and selecting a contractor to replace the system. You all have received our annual request for donations. This year we announced the Mike Kearney Intramural Athlete of the Year Scholarship to be administrated through the Miner Alumni Association. Mike Smith '65 noted that donations to the university's alumni association are likely eligible for company matching gifts. If the company that you work for has a matching program, please take advantage of it. Thank you all for your support of MO Gamma Chapter!
