2A – Daily News – Thursday, June 3, 2010 Community people&events Kelly-Griggs fundraiser Prune now for more blooms By LORNA BONHAM Spring blooming shrubs will produce more flowers next year if pruned after the bloom is finished using either a light deadheading or a more extensive pruning. Deadhead The shrubs with larger flowers or flower clusters are not difficult to deadheaded, which is just snipping off the spent flowers. If the new leaves are beginning to sprout, the flower can be taken off just above the leaves. If the shrubs are evergreens the Photo Courtesy of Christine Wyman The Kelly-Griggs House Museum, 311 Washington St., held a fundraiser on May 7 to celebrate 40 years of being open to the public and raise funds for the foundation restoration project. The shrubs that are best dead- headed include Camellia, Azalea, Daphne, Gardenia, Lilac, Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latfolia), Pieris and Viburnum. Be sure to dispose of all the blooms and do not put any camellia blooms in the compost pile because they can spread camellia blight. More pruning Below are some of the spring blooming shrubs which need a heavier pruning. The stems of the Mockorange (Philadelphus hybrids) which are two years old or older should be thinned out and the other branches need to be shortened to encourage more side branches. The Fringeflower (Loropetalum chinense) needs some of the older limbs trimmed back if a natural look is desired, but it can also be sheared like a hedge for a more for- mal look. The Forsythia and the White Forsythia, (Abeliophyllum dis- tichum) both need about a third of their branches, which have bloomed, cut to the ground. Also remove the oldest branches and any weak or dead branches. The flowering quince (Chaenomeles japonica) also needs several of the oldest stems pruned to the ground. This can be done while it is blooming, to collect the flowers for a beautiful bouquets, but if not done then, do it now. For large clusters of flowers, Emergency Preparedness some of the side branches can also be cut back. The Spiraea bridal- wreath (species prunifolia) needs the oldest stems removed and the other stems clipped back to produce more flowers. The Spiraea babys- breath (species thunbergii), is best if up to half of the stems are removed to maintain height or all stems can be cut to the ground to rejuvenate the shrub each spring. The Sweetshrub or Carolina All- spice (Calycanthus floridus) will produce more flowers if the oldest thickest stems are thinned out and the tallest branches are shortened to encourage more side growth. The new branches will produce more flowers. Don’t forget Father Day on June 20. A new pair of pruning shears, or a beautiful plant are always great gifts. It was a beautiful weekend and we spent most of the time outside visiting. On Saturday night we held our potluck and the campground provided ice cream for the group. Bonnie Love was the Trailboss and she decorated the tables in the Hawaiian theme, with Hawaiian tableclothes, Leis, artificial Hawaiian flowers in vases, cups of Macadamia Nuts and candy, with a vase full of beauti- ful roses from her yard. A correction to my April story, Trailboss was Retta Pereira, who decorated in the Easter theme, with East- er figurines, tableclothes and cups of candy with a large plastic Easter Egg of candy in the top. June 10-13 our campout will be held in Nice at the Aurora RV Park, with John and Carol Siemens as Trailbosses. Anyone owning a self-contained RV that would like to go on monthly campouts with a great small group of people, are encouraged to call Wagon Master Vic Dick- ison at 824-3081 or President Richard Sol at 385-1344.
