Thursday, June 3, 2010 – Daily News – 5B WORLD BRIEFING Israeli PM defends Gaza blockade JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Ben- jamin Netanyahu rejected inter- national criticism of a deadly raid against a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza earlier this week, saying Wednesday the blockade of the Palestinian territory is needed to prevent missile attacks against Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The comments came hours after all remaining pro-Pales- tinians activists from the aid ships were sent to Ben-Gurion airport near Tel Aviv to be deported. Three ambulance planes heading to Turkey were the first to take off, with four other planes ready to embark, Israeli officials said. In all, 527 activists were being deported by air, Interior ministry spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said, and seven wound- ed activists were remaining behind in Israeli hospitals. About a dozen female activists scuffled with security officers at the airport but were quickly subdued by authorities, Israeli officials said. Officials said no charges would be filed and the women were to be deported as planned. Israel has come under harsh international condemnation after its commandos stormed a six-ship aid flotilla Monday in international waters, setting off clashes that killed nine activists and wounded dozens. About 700 activists — including 400 Turks — were trying to break the three-year-old Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip by bringing in 10,000 tons of aid. Dutchman arrested in Holloway disappearance LIMA, Peru (AP) — A young Dutchman previously arrested in the 2005 disappear- ance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway is the prime suspect in a weekend murder of a Peru- vian woman, police said Wednesday. Joran van der Sloot is being sought in the Sunday killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel, Criminal police chief Gen. Cesar Guardia told a news conference. He said the suspect fled the country the next day by land to Chile. The Dutch government said Interpol has issued an interna- tional arrest warrant for Van der Sloot. Guardia said the 22-year-old Dutchman, who was in the country for a poker tournament, appears with the young woman in a video taken at a Lima casi- no early Sunday. The victim’s father, Ricardo Flores, told reporters she was killed about 8 a.m. in a hotel room in the upscale Miraflores neighborhood that was splat- tered with blood, indicating a struggle. BP encounters another setback PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — The BP oil slick drifted per- ilously close to the Florida Pan- handle’s famous sugar-white beaches Wednesday as a risky gambit to contain the leak by shearing off the well pipe ran into trouble a mile under the sea when the diamond-tipped saw became stuck. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the government’s point man for the crisis, said crews hoped to free the blade from the pipe and finish the cut later in the day. The plan was to fit a cap on the blown-out well at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico to capture most of the spewing oil; the twisted, broken pipe had to be sliced first to allow a snug fit. ‘‘I don’t think the issue is whether or not we can make the second cut. It’s about how fine we can make it, how smooth we can make it,’’ Allen said. As the edge of the slick drift- ed within seven miles of Pen- sacola’s beaches, emergency workers rushed to link the last in a miles-long chain of booms designed to fend off the oil. They were stymied by thunder storms and wind before the weather cleared in the after- noon. Forecasters said the oil would probably wash up by Fri- day, threatening a delicate net- work of islands, bays and white-sand beaches that are a haven for wildlife and a major tourist destination dubbed the Redneck Riviera. UK taxi driver kills 12, wounds 25 in England SEASCALE, England (AP) — A taxi driver drove his vehi- cle on a shooting spree across a tranquil stretch of northwest England on Wednesday, methodically killing 12 people and wounding 25 others before turning the gun on himself, offi- cials said. The rampage in the county of Cumbria was Britain’s dead- liest mass shooting since 1996 and it jolted a country where handguns are banned and multi- ple shootings rare. The body of the suspected gunman, 52-year-old Derrick Bird, was found in woods near Boot, a hamlet popular with hikers and vacationers in Eng- land’s hilly, scenic Lake Dis- trict. Police said two weapons were recovered from the scene. Eight of the wounded were in the hospital, with three of them in critical condition. Queen Elizabeth II, who rarely issues statements responding to the news, said she shared in ‘‘the grief and horror of the whole country’’ and passed on her sympathy to the families of the victims. The shootings had ‘‘shocked the people of Cumbria and around the country to the core,’’ Police Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Hyde said. Administration talked about jobs, no offer WASHINGTON (AP) — Administration officials dan- gled the possibility of a job for former Colorado House Speak- er Andrew Romanoff last year in hopes he would forgo a chal- lenge to Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, administration officials said Wednesday, just days after the White House admitted orchestrating a similar job offer in the Pennsylvania Senate race. These officials declined to specify the job that was floated or the name of the administra- tion official who approached Romanoff, and said no formal offer was ever made. They spoke on condition of anonymi- ty, saying they were not cleared to discuss private conversa- tions. The episode follows a simi- lar controversy in Pennsylva- nia, where the White House last year turned to former President Bill Clinton to suggest Rep. Joe Sestak back out of another pri- mary in favor of an unpaid position on a federal advisory board. Sestak declined the offer and defeated Sen. Arlen Specter late last month in the Democra- tic primary after disclosing the job discussions and highlight- ing it as evidence of his anti- establishment political creden- tials. He said last week he rejected Clinton’s feeler in less than a minute. Last Friday, an embarrassed White House acknowledged enlisting Clinton as a go- between to ease out Sestak. The revelations of a possible politi- cal trade called into question President Barack Obama’s repeated promises to run an open government that was above back room deals. Woman says suspect is recruiting kids SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A woman who has a restraining order against the man who falsely claimed to have mur- dered JonBenet Ramsey said Wednesday the former suspect is living as a woman and trying to form a cult of little girls to have sex with him. The woman, 19-year-old Samantha Spiegel, told NBC’s ‘‘Today’’ she had known John Mark Karr since she was 9, when he was a teacher at her school in San Francisco. Her attorney, Robin Sax, told The Associated Press that Spiegel reached out to Karr after he confessed to the death of 6-year-old child beauty queen JonBenet, whose body was found in 1996 in her par- ents’ home in Boulder, Colo. ‘‘She sought him out trying to reconnect, wanting to find out what happened to him,’’ Sax said. Things moved quickly to Karr contacting her hundreds of times a day, Sax said. Spiegel claimed in the restraining order request that Karr made ‘‘ongo- ing death threats’’ and ‘‘threats of sexual exploitation to chil- dren’’ in the e-mails. AT&T will limit phone data use NEW YORK (AP) — Just in time for the release of a new iPhone, AT&T will stop letting new customers sign up for its unlimited Internet data plan for smart phones and iPads and charge more for users who hog the most bandwidth. AT&T hopes to ease conges- tion on its network, which has drawn complaints, particularly in big cities. But the approach could confuse customers unfa- miliar with how much data it takes to watch a YouTube video or fire up a favorite app. Current subscribers will be able to keep their $30-per- month unlimited plans, even if they renew their contracts. But starting Monday, new cus- tomers will have to choose one of two new data plans for all smart phones, including iPhones and BlackBerrys. Subscribers who use little data — like those who may get dozens of e-mails a day but don’t watch much video — will pay slightly less every month than they do now, while heavy users will be dinged with high- er bills. The move takes effect in time for the expected unveiling of Apple’s new iPhone next week. Analysts said they expect other phone companies to fol- low. With no caps on consump- tion, data use could swamp wireless networks while rev- enue for the operators remains flat. Coleman’s wife tells 911 his head is ’bloody and gross’ SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former child TV star Gary Coleman was bleeding from the back of his head and ‘‘bubbling at the mouth’’ after falling at his Santaquin home but still tried to get up, his distraught wife told a Utah emergency dispatcher in a 911 tape released Wednesday.
