Of those alumnae who were "Very Interested," many shared stories about their
unique experience and how their sisters supported them in college. A 1980s alumna
said, "Pi Phi gave me a sense of security because of the family structure it gave. It
drew me out of my shell and I learned a lot." Another 1980s alumnae said, "Pi Phi
was the backbone for activities I participated in on campus. I could not have done
the things I did without my sisters' support." No matter if the alumna was a
founding member or recent graduate, it was evident that alumnae value the bond
they share with their Pi Phi sisters.
Next, alumnae were asked to rank the Mississippi Beta Chapter compared to other
sororities on campus when they were in school. As shown in Chart B, 25%
considered Mississippi Beta Chapter to be "Among the Best," while 69%
considered the chapter "Average," and 6% considered the chapter to be "Among
the Worst." Although most alumnae indicated that the chapter was average at Ole
Miss, chapter rank was not of particular importance to interviewees. Several
alumnae recognized the long-standing tier system at the University of Mississippi
and said Pi Beta Phi has never been labeled as a top-tier chapter among the historic
southern chapters on campus. Alumnae were more focused on the strong sisterhood
and diversity of recruitment than campus chapter rank.
