ΣΦΕ EARTBEA H T UNIVERSITY OF OREGON s SIGMA PHI EPSILON Oregon Beta SUMMER 2019 ALUMNI VOLUNTEER CORPORATION SEEKS HIGHER ENGAGEMENT Reconnect with Oregon Beta! A s we head into the summer, excitement and enthusiasm from Oregon Beta alumni continues to grow—as do our numbers! Since our last communication, we have added another three alumni to the Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) ranks: Dan Keough '87, Wes Daniels '88, and Tim Kerr '89. We now stand at 15 members. SPRING AVC MEETING A SUCCESS On April 7, members of the AVC traveled to Eugene for our quarterly meeting with the undergraduates. SigEp National Housing was also on-site to discuss policies and the development of a three-year strategic plan for facility improvements, including renovating the basement to make it a more functional space for Chapter activities and meetings. Clearly, our recent efforts are paying off, as both our overall Chapter manpower and the num- ber of undergraduates living in the Chapter House are growing. After the AVC meeting, alumni and undergraduates enjoyed a pizza lunch together, followed by informal discussions and two "career spotlight" presentations organized by Jack Moothart '88, which were delivered by Dan Keough and me. If you are interested and willing to participate in a "choosing your career" discussion with the undergraduates, please contact Jack at jack. moothart@coopersurgical.com, as we hope to provide this opportunity to the undergraduate brothers at least twice a year. Although the weather ended up interfering with our initial plans to attend a Ducks baseball game with the undergraduates, the day was still a success. SHARE YOUR STORY WITH OREGON BETA In this newsletter, you will find a featured article in which Dick Allen '58, Jim Carter '58, and Swede Gummer '58 reflect on their time in the Chapter during the late 1950s. As Oregon Beta heads toward its 100th anniversary in 2026, the AVC would like to start highlighting the memories of all our alumni throughout the decades. We would like to hear about your undergraduate experience too! If you and one or two of your Oregon Beta brothers are interested in participating in such an article, and especially if you have photos you would like to share, please let us know! STAY TUNED FOR UPCOMING EVENTS This summer, we are planning alumni get-togethers in Portland, Seattle, and Northern California. We will also invite current members to these events. Stand by for more info. This fall, we will once again host an "alumni weekend" in conjunction with the undergraduates' Balanced Man Scholarship celebration the weekend of October 5-6. The Saturday football game is against Cal. We will provide refreshments at the Chapter House that morning and undergraduates will be on-site to provide tours of the facility. Also, feel free to join us at three different SigEp alumni tail- gate spots (specifics to come as we get closer). On Sunday morning, the Balanced Man Scholarship celebration will be held in the Erb Memorial Union, and all alumni are welcome to join. Please follow us on the Oregon Beta Alumni Facebook page (see page 4), where we will provide more details on all these events as the dates approach. MEET YOUR BOARD As a reminder, the Oregon Beta AVC meets approximately six times per year (three times in Eugene and three in Portland). If you would like to officially join the board or just attend a meeting, please contact me at the email below.
