dream boldly. live fully. 3 VOLLEYBALL Haley Harman '17 is a sophomore from Dallas, Texas. During this season with the Lady Raiders volleyball team, she made six appearances and had nine kills for 30 attacks. She is a true representation of Kappa on and off the court, always playing with stellar sportsmanship, landing a perfect 4.0, and making All-Big 12 Academic First Team honors. Haley is currently pursuing a business major from the Rawls College of Business Administration. Haley always goes out of her way to brighten her sisters' day and constantly radiates joy. She is a true gem and we are so proud of what she has accomplished. Brooke Kanas '18 is from New Braunfels, Texas. Brooke burst into her freshman season for Lady Raider volleyball as an instant superstar, being named one of the Big 12's top freshmen. Brooke was one of six freshmen named to the All-Big 12 Rookie Team and one of four to receive All-Big 12 first or second team honors. Also during this season, she was twice named Big 12 Rookie of the Week and earned her first ROTW award after leading all Big 12 freshmen with a .356 hitting percentage and a combined 31 kills. Brooke is an incredibly hard worker and a great example of a Kappa woman. She is pursuing an engineering degree. TRACK Lexye Price '17 is a freshman from Tyler, Texas. Lexye runs track for the Lady Raider track team. This year one of her best races was the 600-meter sprint. During the finals this season she placed 5th in the 600 meter and helped our Lady Raider track team reach second in the Big 12! She is pursuing a degree in interior design. ACADEMICS Tina Zhu '17 is from San Antonio, Texas. She is a double major, studying Spanish and biology. Tina has wanted to become a physician from a very young age and is planning to continue on to medical school after receiving her undergraduate degree. She plans on attending TTUHSC School of Medicine in the fall of 2020. Tina has had a stellar GPA during her course of study at Tech and is a member of Mortar Board. This fall semester, Tina was nominated for homecoming queen through Mortar Board. She also has an internship paging for Congressman Vicente Gonzalez's office this summer in Washington, D.C. Tina is a fabulous example of how strong Kappa academics are. We are so proud of our superstar and all she has accomplished. EXCELLING AT TEXAS TECH D elta Psi members are incredible—not only are they loyal and active members in Kappa, but they display their talents across campus and in the community. Some pursue athletics, like Haley Harmon '17, Brooke Kanas '18, and Lexye Price '17; others, like Tina Zhu '17, excel in academics. Whatever it is, you can be sure there's a Delta Psi chasing her goals and dreams! Alumnae News Kathryn Williams Yarbrough '57 has been proud and happy to be a Kappa for 62 years. "Being in the military we have moved many times and I could always connect with Kappas. Thanks for keeping in touch." Email: yarbrough@aol.com Carolann Pinson Moore '58 believes that there's no other experience like that of being in Kappa. "The friendships forged between women of like-minded values lasts a lifetime. I learned so much from others about being a good listener, respecting the wonderful talents of my sisters, and hopefully being an effective leader as chapter president 1960-61!" Email: capmoore@sbcglobal.net Cheryl Allen Threlkeld '58 has loved sharing Kappa with her two daughters. "Lori was a Kappa at Baylor and Mandy was a Kappa at Texas A&M," she shared. "At this time in my life I'm having fun dancing—from country two-step to ballroom." Email: cherylath@suddenlink.net Sharon Darr Harris '59 is happy to say that both of her daughters and her granddaughter are Kappas. This had made Kappa even more special to her. Email: sdharris3589@att.net Susan O'Brien '61 enrolled in the Department of Architecture in the fall of 1960. The last woman to attempt that degree faded from sight in 1952 and there were no women in the class of 200 incoming students. "It was a five-year professional degree, which I crammed into six due to the need to work my way through the last four years," she shared. "Twenty of that first 200 graduated with a bachelor's in architecture degree. I was told I had the highest GPA." She lived in a single room with a private bath attached, thanks to Alice Mayes, an elegant feminist who defied the Dean of Women to provide her shelter—from her sophomore year up until her last two years when she was allowed to live off-campus. The room was on the Kappa wing. "Because my lab hours were three for one, a load of 18 hours meant 40 hours in class and easily 60 additional hours of work in my room, which does not count the hours I worked to afford my education," she explained. "The net result was that I would collapse onto my bed after the last final every semester, exhausted." Susan would often wake up 48 hours later to find herself bathed, in clean sleepwear, in clean linens, and was told she was fed. "If that's not sisterhood, nothing is," she said. Susan went on to be "the first woman to" in many scholastic, professional, and social venues. "All of them had the same barriers I encountered at Tech, but no one else (Continued on page 4)
