3 Beta Sigma Embraces Refreshing Changes Undergraduates on the Road to Community Service B eta Sigma has been thriving this semester in achievement and accomplishment. Recently, we accepted a transfer student, Veronica Geiss '18, from the Alpha Xi Chapter at the University of Iowa. Veronica has moved into the chapter house and is assimilating well into being in Beta Sigma. BETA SIGMA AT THE TOP We are proud to share we have made enormous strides in terms of academics. Our chapter GPA has increased from 3.22 to 3.27 from the previous spring 2018 semester, and our Panhellenic rank has increased from 15th to 10th. The Beta Sigma women are above the all-women's average, all-sorority average, Panhellenic average, and FSCL average GPA. SERVING UP SUCCESS In the world of philanthropy, we held our annual Ultra Violet event at the end of March. On March 29, we served spaghetti at the chapter house from 5-7 p.m., cleverly named ΣKetti Dinner. A big thank-you to Andrea Rayner '16 for leading our Σketti Dinner. We also participated in our Adopt-a-Highway week with each Beta Sigma sister beautifying and cleaning a stretch of highway that we are responsible for in Lafayette. SIGHTS SET ON RECRUITMENT Some changes to fall primary recruitment include new chants, changes to preference ceremony, and more focus on sisterhood during invitational rounds. Eva Lianos '16, vice president of membership, shares, "I am really excited for this year's recruitment. I think we already have a strong group of women to recruit. I am looking forward to getting to know them and their individual strengths better and hope that this is one of the best years we have had yet." UNDERGRADUATES STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE Our executive council members and our advisory board supervisor, Cassandra Swanson '17, attended Sigma Kappa's Regional Leadership Conference in Chicago, Ill., at the end of January. The officers learned how to effectively lead the chapter and gain recognition from National Headquarters in the form of standards of excellence points. ΣK HAS HEART FOR MOMS AND DADS Our parents' event was held the weekend of April 6-7. Our Mom's and Dad's Day chairman, Madison Vanhorenbeck '17, planned a special craft for collegiate members and their guests on Saturday followed by a brunch on Sunday. The brunch was held at the Purdue Memorial Union and featured a silent auction with baskets made from members of the chapter and their families. Looking forward, Dad's Day has been set for Saturday, October 26, and the Homecoming game that day will be against the Fighting Illini from the University of Illinois. Additionally, be looking for changes to the Homecoming football game activities with the Beta Sigma members. Our goal is to move events away from the chapter house and to a spot in the tailgating fields for collegiate members and alumnae to interact before the game. UNDERGRADUATES CALL FOR PEN PALS We are still trying to strengthen our pen pal initiative within Beta Sigma! If you are interested in emailing a current Beta Sigma member, please email Vice President of Alumnae Relations Sydney Judge '16 at vpar.betasigma@gmail.com. Thank you for your continued support to Beta Sigma. We appreciate you all! Additionally, feel free to come by the chapter house anytime and visit.
