Saturday, May 29, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Religion Faith&Worship Church news Saddle Ridge Ranch Set among the wide-open spaces of Big Sky country, Saddle Ridge Ranch is a place where children can ask ques- tions and discover the answers found in God's work. During their day at the ranch, children will visit Worship Rally Valley and the Bible Study Bunkhouse. Around the ranch children will find crafts at Blazing Star Stables, music at Campfire Creek, recreation at Mus- tang Mountain and snacks at the Big Sky Grill. It's Vacation Bible School at First Southern Baptist Church, 585 Kimball Road, Red Bluff, next to Meteer School. Children from the age of 3 years up through sixth grade are welcome and the school is free. Vacation Bible School runs 9 a.m. to noon June 21-25. For more information, call Mary Salisbury at 529-2251 or send an e-mail to rsalis@earthlink.net. Main pursuit in life? Voices of faith: What should be our main pursuit in life? FOLLOW THE BIBLE The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: We are taught in the Bible that all of mankind has an entrance and exit. That is primary to life on the Earth. It is what we do between our comings and goings that determines our understanding of our duty to life. Basically, we should pursue that quality of life that pro- vides an avenue to search the profound in order to discover that life is attached to something more than what we want or need out of this world. We are attached to the soil, atmos- phere, laws and each other. The Bible provides me with a guide for understanding my place and how to achieve what is deemed important to life. Our primary desires should be as the book of Micah 6:8 encourages us, "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" How powerful is that teaching. The person who seeks God's good will discover the meaning of life and all the pur- suits. DEVELOP A KIND HEART Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City, Mo.: Most of us simply want to be happy and avoid suffering. If we recognize this, then we must realize that all beings are just like us in their wish for happiness and their desire to overcome suffering. The prob- lem is where to find real and lasting happiness. Most seek happiness in things that keep them stuck in suffering. They falsely believe that happiness can be found in things, such as material possessions. But we know that is a very temporary happiness, because material possessions are impermanent and do not last. Everything in this phenomenal world is impermanent; nothing lasts. Even the best relationships eventually come to an end, when one or the other partner dies. So, where do we find real and lasting happiness? I believe His Holiness the Dalai Lama describes where to find such happiness when he said: "We are visitors on this planet. We are here for ninety or one hundred years at the very most. During that period, we must try to do something good, something useful, with our lives, if you contribute to other people's happiness, you will find the true goal, the true meaning of life." As the Dalai Lama pointed out, we need to develop a kind and compassionate heart toward all people. That is real happiness. A very good method for developing this heart of limitless compassion is through a daily meditation practice. The best gift The One who hung the stars in space and carved out the mountains – the God of all creation, is the One who loves you and me individually and per- sonally. God lays out the rafters of His home in the rain clouds, and rides upon the wings of the wind. He set the world on its foundations and set a boundary for the seas, so they would never again cover the earth. Because God made springs pour water into the ravines, streams and rivers can now gush down from the mountains, providing water for all the animals. Because of God’s goodness, the birds nest beside the streams and sing songs of praise to their creator. From His heavenly home He sends the rain upon the mountains, and fills the earth with fruitful foods. He causes grass to grow for the livestock and nutritious foods for the people of the earth. God made the moon to mark the seasons and the sun knows just when to set. The warmth of the sun gives us a reminder of His endless love for us each new day, and the moon reminds us of His faithfulness. There is noth- ing overlooked by the Lord. He cares for the smallest sparrow and all life upon the earth. He loves each one of us, with His everlasting love. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (MCT) — Jeff Allen is doing what he's always dreamed of doing: making people laugh. But his life has been any- thing but comedy. It was a long, painful journey to where he is now, a comic with the four-man Apostles of Comedy. The group is part of an increasingly popular genre of Christian comedians. At one time, Christian comedy was looked at as an oxymoron. "In the '70s and early '80s, some churches thought it was inappropriate and even sacrilegious," said Dan Rupple, past president of the Christian Comedy Association, whose mem- bership is about 350. "By the 1990s, the church pretty much embraced it. Only very conservative denomi- nations still may be hesi- tant." Man turned away from God by choosing his own ways; yet God sent the greatest of all gifts to us, in spite of our wayward ways. He even provided His love letter to us, found in the pages of the Bible. He has not left us unguided, for all answers for life and living are found in the Bible, the Word of God. Every day that we are alive, we can offer all praise and honor and glory to God, for the greatest gift of the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ. "For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that every- one who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) NLT "But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God." (John 1:12) NLT has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) NLT You can unwrap your gift by pray- ing your own sincere prayer: Father God, thank you for sending Jesus, your only begotten Son, to this earth, so that I can know You. Patricia Martin GodTalk Jesus is the best gift, and He is our Heavenly Father’s perfect gift to us. Will we unwrap God’s gift to us or will we neglect His offer? No one else can offer us the Gift of His Son and no one else can offer us the gift of eternal life. What a gift – what a wonderful gift. "There is salvation in no one else. God Thank You Jesus for dying upon the cross and for shedding Your blood so that I can be cleansed from all of my sin. Please for- give me for my sins and cleanse me now. I turn my entire life over to You Jesus, and I ask You to be my Savior and Lord. I ask You to come into my heart today. With Your help I choose to live for You all the days of my life. Amen Patricia Martin leads a ministry of reconciliation and caring for Native American people in Tehama County. He said the quality of Christian comedy is begin- ning to be on par with secu- lar comedy, and more doors are opening in mainstream entertainment. Allen, 53, of Fairview, Tenn., has been a comedian for 32 years, performing in night clubs, including Stan- ford & Sons in Kansas City, Mo. Allen said: "I wanted to know if God existed. I said, 'If you're real, reveal your- self to me.'" Soon afterward, he met someone who also was doing comedy and was the first person to talk to him about the Bible. Allen said he had looked at Bibles in hotels but didn't understand the King James translation. His marriage was rocky, and he was ques- tioning if comedy was his total purpose in life. "I opened the first enve- lope, and it was Ecclesi- astes," he said. "That one 45-minute sermon summed up my life. It was all mean- ingless. Life without God would have no meaning, and without meaning there is no purpose. "I called the buddy who had given me the tapes and who had said he was pray- ing for me. I was in tears. 'I have a problem,' I said. "'What's the problem?' "'There is a God.' "'I know.'" Since then, he does clean acts in clubs and also per- forms in churches. He used to have a pre- conceived notion that Chris- tians were "killjoys."
