Highway signs: Click it or ticket "Click It or Ticket," what does it mean? What can it mean? It was a sign on the freeway that I had not noted before. I read it to my hus- band and he knew immediately what it meant. It was a short mes- sage that is changed every so often. I wonder how many read and get the meaning? I began to think about the many highway signs there are, also the many old time sayings that convey a meaning about the happenings of people. "Two peas in a pod," mean- ing that two people are just the same in temperament. "From the frying pan into the fire," suggests that a person was already in trouble and made it worse by entering into even bigger trouble. "A stitch in time saves nine," infers that if a per- son thinks clearly they can avoid getting into trouble if they look ahead carefully. "Birds of a feather, fly together," can have both a nega- tive meaning (trouble), or a positive meaning (doing the right thing.) "You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear," meaning there are times you just can’t make a per- son change. What is the lesson? I believe it is getting the message even if you don’t understand it the first time you read it. Having even as a child a great deal of curiosity about the meaning of words, I continue to ask the question what, where, when and why? I currently purchased a book that documents the meaning of road signs. Each sign is addressed in the SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc. The pictures are great but not all are easy to rec- ognize. Every country has their signs of meaning. An example is the triangle shape sign with a mosquito in the center. The back- ground is yellow with an outline of red. The mosquito is mostly black with a red tail. The sign is a major reminder that malaria producing mosquitoes are in the vicinity. Such signs were displayed Tanzania and even Malar- ia-free Finland. One sign showed CAUTION at the top of a rectangular sine, color of the sign was yellow lined with black, the black picture below showed a man and woman holding a young child and running depicting a rushed crossing of some area. The country displaying this sign was not shown but does get the message out as "hurry up and be safe." Many yellow and black diamond shaped road signs depict the possi- bility of rough roads ahead. Signs may state "Cuando LLueve" or known to English speakers as "When Wet" which means the roads are very slippery when wet. The pic- ture on this sign shows a car sliding. In Kenya, the taxi drivers paint a prayer across their vehicle. "We are asking God to protect us from the Carolyn Barber hazards of our roads," One such taxi driver of Bombolulu decorated his taxi with" The Lord is my shepherd, in Swahili). "I feel safer because the Bible says, ‘Ask and you shall receive." One vertical white and black sign is displayed with a triangular hunk of ice crumbling above the following sign "Do Not Go Beyond This Point" black arrows jutting out to each side. In Nepal visitors are cautioned to watch for unusual noises like trees breaking or rocks moving. They are further cautioned by these words, … "If you are caught in a land slide, either run to stable ground or lie down and curl up into a ball." I have a new awakening to the importance of signs of signal to dan- ger and or safety. I believe I will pay more attention as I drive the high- ways and bi-ways of the whole world. Oh yes, the meaning of "Click It or Ticket," means turn off your cell phone…no not really, the real mes- sage is to Fasten Your Seat Belt or Get A Ticket. At any rate roadway signs are very, very important. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
