Page 4 L ambda Chi Alpha at OSU has a remarkable history of brothers who have answered the call to serve in all branches of the U.S. Military, the Peace Corps, as well as other service to the USA. On page 5, please see the brief biographies of the service of 15 brothers, spanning eight decades—beginning with our oldest living alumnus, World War II veteran U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Dean Barnes '40-433. Dean is 99 years young and resides in Santa Cruz, CA. Our history includes the four Bailey brothers (Lt. Leeds Bailey '37-271, Capt. Burns Bailey '38-286, Lt. Todd Bailey '40-310, and Capt. Douglas Bailey '42-467) who were raised in Oregon's Harney County. ey became ΛΧΑ brothers at Oregon State and then each became U.S. Military officers and leading troops in WWII. It also includes at least six brothers (Lt. Robert McConnell '38-280, Lt. omas Johnston '39-288, Col. Claude orp '40-317, Delbert Crews '41-459, 1st Lt. John Coleman '42-462, and Robert Smith '43-491) that did not return home from WWII, giving their lives in service to their country. Another WWII veteran, Col. Ernest Bearss '32-231, joined the Army ROTC at Oregon State and served from 1936 to 1964. Col. Bearss and his wife, Madge, generously gave $276,000 to Alpha Lambda as part of their estate plan. Capt. Dean Swi '58-698 was raised in Vale, OR, and joined ΛΧΑ upon arriving at Oregon State. He was recruited to play football for the Beavers in the backfield and earned the nickname "Swiy." He served as ΛΧΑ High Alpha during the 1960-61 academic year. Having joined the Air Force ROTC, he was a fighter pilot in Vietnam and lost his life on December 7, 1966 during combat. More recently, brother David Gilkey '86-1218, served as an award-winning photojournalist with National Public Radio from 1996-2016. A Portland native, brother Gilkey learned photography from his father. David's work with NPR focused on conflict photography, which covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and disasters like the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the Ebola outbreak in Liberia. In June 2016, he was covering the war in Afghanistan and when he was killed by the Taliban, along with an NPR interpreter. His work was featured in A Tribute to David Gilkey on the OSU campus from April 29-May 2 at the Fairbanks Gallery. Traditions of service to country continue at Alpha Lambda with a number of undergraduate brothers serving and leading in the Army, Air Force, and Navy ROTC programs at OSU. e above history and the biographies are a small fraction of the Αlpha Lambda brothers who have served. Please consider sharing a summary your service and knowledge of other brothers that have given the ultimate sacrifice in their service to country.
