By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor Its been a long time coming for the Spartans, but Red Bluffs boys basketball team overcame its eight-year drought without a playoff win mostly with ease Friday night. On the back of Curtis Twitchells 17 points and 8 rebounds, the No. 4 Spartans defeated the visiting and fifth-seeded Oroville Tigers 56-41 in a Northern Section Division III quarterfinal. The Spartans last playoff win came in 2004. There was, perhaps, little anticipated drama coming into Fridays matchup. Red Bluff (1116) routed Oroville (8-19) 60-39 in a nonleague game on Jan. 10. Red Bluffs playoff win was just as lopsided for most of the game as the Spartans got off to a hot start in the first half by exploiting the Tigers lack of size down low. A steady diet of Twitchell under the basket had him pacing all scorers at the half with 15 points and had his team up 3113. Red Bluffs cushion would hold during a third period that saw Oroville outpacing the Spartans 159 before Red Bluffs Jacob Bigler knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put his team up 43-28 going to the fourth. Oroville, riding what little momentum it had in the second half, closed its deficit to as little as six points in the period, which made the game feel closer than it was. Emotions got the best of the Tigers in the final quarter and technical fouls abounded, which put Mike Nichols on the line. Nichols, who missed his first series of four technical free throws, went back to the line for another four a few minutes later and sank all of those. Nichols finished with 9 points on 9-of14 shooting from the free-throw line. Red Bluff next travels to No. 1 Enterprise (22-3) at 8 p.m. Wednesday for a semifinal matchup. Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at spor ts@redbluffdailynews.com. GIANTS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL D-IV PLAYOFFS Vogelsong starts spring opener, Cain next No. 3 Corning girls beat Willows; No. 1 boys down West Valley SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Madison Bumgarner will follow Matt Cain in San Franciscos starting rotation, though Giants manager Bruce Bochy says there will likely be some shuffling before the end of spring camp. We can still tweak it, Bochy said Friday. Ill keep saying that when I look at all five starters, they are all so balanced. Ryan Vogelsong starts Saturdays exhibition opener against a visiting split squad of Los Angeles Angels. Cain will take the ball Sunday, followed by Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito. Zito will start for the World Series champions in their regular-season home opener, with Vogelsong to pitch out of the fifth spot. I havent really announced that yet, Bochy said. At the end of the year, knock on wood they all stay healthy, theyll get the same amount of starts. Its not who is No. 1 or who follows who. Each one of these guys gives us a chance to win every time they take the mound. I dont want them to get caught up in this. Lincecum, the two-time Cy Young Award winner who made the previous four opening day starts, is happy with the arrangement and glad for the opportunity to pitch in the seasons opening series in Los Angeles. Im definitely excited to get out there again and throw against them, Lincecum said. That rivalry is so huge and the Dodgers went out and made themselves better too. I enjoy throwing at the Los Angeles Dodger blue, and not necessarily at the name on the back. GOLF 9 a.m. TGC PGA Tour-WGC, Accenture Match Play Championship, quarterfinal matches, at Marana, Ariz. 11 a.m. NBC PGA Tour-WGC, Accenture Match Play Championship, quarterfinal matches, at Marana, Ariz.
