4B Daily News Saturday, February 23, 2013 Religion Faith Righteousness is... Voices of Faith Are we born sinners and unworthy of Gods love? The Kansas City Star (MCT) The Rev. Justin Hoye, St. Patricks Catholic Church: Yes, we are born into this world oriented away from God, a state traditionally referred to as original sin. This state is not a consequence of my personal sin, but a condition contracted from the very beginning of mankind, when humanity rejected the life God prepared. A good analogy might be that of a child who is born with an addiction because the mother used drugs during pregnancy. The child did not do anything to acquire this state, but it is a reality conveyed through anothers free act. Humanity was and continues to be deceived into sin, a perpetual belief that our way is better than Gods way. Even in this state, God does not forsake us. God cares for humanity even in our stubbornness to pursue a way of living that leads to self-destruction. On our own, mankind has been incapable of fixing this ongoing departure from God. In time, God restored us to life in the divine person of Jesus Christ. Jesus life, passion and death were completely oriented toward Gods will, and by our immersion into this life celebrated in the waters of baptism we, too, are saved, re-oriented into a right relationship with God. This drama, while showing our ongoing tendency to choose self-destructive patterns of living, also shows most beautifully Gods persistent and saving love for us. Duke Tufty, pastor, Unity Temple on the Plaza: Holy smokes, where on earth did you ever get such a notion? I say where on earth because that notion certainly didnt come from heaven. Go to the maternity ward at the closest hospital, look through the window where they keep the newborn babies and point to a sinner that could be deemed unworthy in anybodys eyes. I cannot imagine what kind of a mind made up this original sin malarkey; it doesnt make a bit of sense. Every baby is pure, wholesome and precious. We are not born into original sin, but each of us is born an original blessing. Jesus said that we are the light of the world, and we should let our light shine. He also warned about allowing that light to be covered up by judgments that diminish ones self worth and demonize the fine work of the divine creator. If you believe you are a born sinner and unworthy in the eyes of God, thats the way you will live your life. If you believe you are a good person and a beneficial presence to this earth, thats the way you will live your life. So let me ask you, are you a born sinner and unworthy in the eyes of God? The answer to that question is: whatever you think. &Worship The traditional season of Lent begins on February 13 and I want to say something meaningful about it. To do that I have to tell a story. Maybe several stories. As we spent the day in worship and prayer in a little house dedicated to that purpose in Ronkonkowa, New York, God spoke. There were seven of us three from the Long Island location where we met and one from Pennsylvania with a ministry in New Jersey, representing the tri-state region; two from New England with regional ministries and representing that region; and a guy from California (me) who thinks God wants to bridge the nation with His Holy Spirit. When we asked God for a vision He showed one of us a meandering river and a road being supernaturally built upon its bank. When I wondered why an unadjusted meandering route seemed more favored than straight God spoke, and I was privileged to share, "Righteousness is a question of alignment, not direction." When Jesus turned toward Jerusalem His friends faced a walk of several days. They spent many months on the journey, not because their leader couldnt follow directions, but because the Son of God knows righteousness to be a question of alignment rather than of direction. During this time which is chronicled in Luke 10-19 the disciples have already confessed Jesus as Lord, witnessed more miracles than can be shaken at by the proverbial stick, and gone on their own first missionary journey that featured similar acts of the power to bless and heal. They have begun to see and anticipate their inheritance as heirs of Gods grace and glory, but they have a long way to go before growing into it. On the road they will learn to pray and to sustain teaching me the very same things prayer, they will comprehend that He taught the disciples way back their job as gatekeepers is to open when and being unbelievably kind when it became clear I rather than close the porneeded remedial work in tals of the Kingdom, and lessons supposedly already they will discover the learned, in tests supposedly difference between relialready passed. Whenever I gion and relation to the pronounce myself now Most High. They will ready for Jerusalem He find out what is imporgives me another opportutant and what is trivial nity to repent to re-focus unlike the religious leadon Him and so come to ers of their day and see myself in a more accuthey will come to marvel rate light. The time in at the privilege of repenGalilee has turned out to be tance and sacrifice. They James the greatest privilege I can will come to know that a imagine and anything but history of sin like that the irritating rehearsal for of Zaccheas is no more the good stuff I once imaga barrier to Kingdom life ined it to be. I am pretty than a history of poverty sure my experience is a barrier to wealth like the woman putting two pennies in mainstream in this regard. During Lent Christians traditionthe temple treasury or the man given five talents for investment in ally give up something they are likethe Kingdom. They will make ly better off without. They often take another mission trip and practice up a practice that benefits their walk the principles (Luke 10:2-9) of and others welfare. These are good blessing before all, followed by things, but God help us if tokens of hanging out with people, meeting sacrifice and ministry are all we take their needs (as God provides) and to advantage in Lent. It is about witnessing for the faith in that intentionally seeking a closer walk moment by moment. It is about teleorder. Their journey to Jerusalem scoping our earthly pilgrimage into a turned out to be a lot more than time better idea and a taste of the elapsed in the covering of the heavenly one. Repentance turning ground between where they began toward God and away from self as and where they arrived. The months the center of existence is the greaton the road became a question of est privilege and the longest process progressive alignment rather than we will ever be given. That is true whether we begin across the land or direction. More than twenty years ago God right where we are. gave me a spoken word. He said, "I James A. Wilson is the author of want you to go to Galilee." Living As Ambassadors of Although I wanted to journey to Israel then and have been there Relationships and The Holy Spirit since, I was pretty sure at the time it and the End Times available at was not all about that kind of trip. In local bookstores or by e-mailing the intervening years God has been him at praynorthstate@charter.net.
