As I was sorting receipts for tax time, I came across my first real withholding statement. The year was 1953, I worked at the Tehama County Library, and I was 15 years old. The library was located in the basement of the Tehama County Courthouse. The jail was right next door and sometimes the prisoners were at the buildings iron rod windows whistling or calling out to me as I arrived for work. Their attention embarrassed me so I would hurry down the stairs and into the building. The job was after school and during the summer. Often I would arrive at the back steps to find a dead mountain lion or some deceased magpies or simply some rabbit's ears lying at the entry way. This was the spot where the bounty trappers brought their prizes to be verified by county officials. Things were less dramatic once I got inside the library. I spent most of the day in a tiny, musty, book-filled cubicle. There was a small window, which was covered mostly by stacked up books. My primary job was to mend and sand book pages that were rough and uneven. The mending consisted of patching tears with strips of white paper saturated with diluted glue. The sanding was necessary on new books were not sent from the printer with the pages trimmed. The edges between the covers had to literally be sanded down The hourly wage was 52 cents per hour. with fine sand paper. I never thought I would be blessed to marry a wonderful man and that it would damage our relationship, but it did. My mom has had a great influence on my life for 32 years, but this had to end. She only developed a problem with my then-boyfriend when she saw that it was serious. She tried everything to break us up, including having him investigated. She told me he was no good. I chose to pray and follow my heart and not listen to her. Im happy I did. I couldnt ask for a better husband. Mom did not come to my wedding and refuses to come to my house, saying I chose a man over her. But, Annie, I cannot allow her to continue to be so disrespectful of my husband. Please tell your readers that trying to control your children will only push them away and create resentment. My mom centered her life around me and now feels lost. Im still struggling to adjust to not having her in my life, but I refuse to leave my husband to make her happy. I have made great choices. I completed graduate school and have a terrific career. Many mothers would love to have a daughter and son-in-law like us. Is there anything I can do? Missing My Mother but Loving My Husband Dear Missing: Your mothers jealousy has clouded her thinking, and instead of a close, warm relationship with you, your husband and your future children, she has isolated herself in bitterness.
