Swancoat '12 L onghorns. Football. Austin. Somehow, Chad Smith '05 knew he would always end up at the University of Texas. "Since I can remember, I've been a Texas Longhorn fan," he shared. Although Chad was initially opposed to the idea of joining a fraternity based on stereotypes, he got to know some Pike members during the first week of school. "I began to realize it was not at all as I had expected," he recalled. "Instead, it was a group of guys a lot like me." As a partner at the Houston office of international law firm, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Chad practices Corporate M&A law focused on energy transactions in the upstream and midstream space. "I previously worked at Latham & Watkins LLP and before that Kelly Hart and Hallman LLP," he said. Chad graduated from University of Texas School of Law, aer earning a BA/BS at UT Austin in 2005. Chad admittedly has not stayed as involved with the fraternity as he would like, but that hasn't kept him from continuing to support the chapter from afar. Unable to live in the house at the time due to the living quarters being in such bad shape, Chad is passionate about the capital campaign and what it has to offer current and future members. "I do not want future students to have to miss out on living in the house, simply because it is not a desirable or suitable place to live," he expressed. Some of Chad's best memories remain hanging out around the campfire in the front yard during the yearly Swamp Party build. Like many alumni, he wants the same great experiences for the next generation. "While we have been extremely successful in rebuilding the fraternity's numbers with quality students over the last 15 years, we've done so in spite of a house that not nearly as nice as other fraternity houses, particularly with respect to the living quarters," he shared. "I think it is essential to building stronger and longer-lasting friendships that there be a house that students want to live in going forward." For those who are hesitant to donate to this campaign, Chad urges them to think back on the value they've received from being a part of Pike. "Not only from the lifetime friendships you've made, but also from other connections that have helped you be successful in your professional career," he explained. Giving back financially is just one small way to help set up the next generation for success while continuing the traditions that all alumni have come to know and love. His advice to current members? "Look for opportunities to take a leadership role in the fraternity. Have a ton of fun, but also save time for your studies." Chad enjoys doing anything outdoors with his wife, Megan, who was a UT Alpha Phi and Pike Sweetheart.. He can be reached at chad.smith@kirkland.com.
