FARMHOUSE FRATERNITY 4 CHAPTER GRAND Darrell Heiss '49 entered Chapter Grand on April 20, 2018, at the age of 87. He lived in North Platte, Neb. Elden Wesely '51 entered Chapter Grand after his battle with Parkinson's disease. He and his sister had a joint funeral on February 9. Merwyn Davidson '52 entered Chapter Eternal on January 1, 2019. His son, Mark R. Davidson '81, reports Merwyn was an alumnus and business manager when the previous chapter house was built. "We visited the new house dedication last fall and he really enjoyed it," Mark said. Don Gruber '52 entered Chapter Eternal in January 2018. He lived in Mesa, Ariz., and had four children. ALUMNI NEWS Daniel "Boyd" Shank '32 earned his Ph.D. from Iowa State University and spent five years at the University of Arkansas where he was a corn and cotton breeder testing commercial varieties and teaching a course in plant breed. He then moved to South Dakota in 1946 where he experimented corn breeding and teaching. He does volunteer church work, helping send large print Sunday bulletins to nursing homes. Gabelman '40 says the book Tin Can Titans by John Wukovits details the impact that Destroyer Squadron 21 had on the Pacific War against Japan from Guadalcanal to the end when his ship led the U.S.S. mission into Tokyo Bay for the war's end. Warren turned 98 years old on April 18, 2019, and lives in Madison, Wis. Gerald R. Abbenhaus, Ph.D. '40 passed 90 years old and is looking forward to turning 100. He lives in Creve Coeur, Mo. Phone: (314) 432-2368 ALUMNI UPDATE Wayne F. Keim, Ph.D. '42 is in good health at age 94, except for arthritis in the knees. He stays home and watches the tube, especially sporting events. Wayne lives in Fort Collins, Colo. Email: wfandjkeim@gmail.com Lyle I. Droge '43 lives with his wife, Wilma, in Pawnee City, Neb. Lyle is 96 years old and Wilma is 93. William T. Carlson '53 is proud to brag on his daughter's fabric collage quilting, which can be found at www.susancarlson. com. She's planning on teaching online and traveling internationally to teach her art style. A. "Bruce" Maunder, Ph.D. '53 and his wife, Kathy, have two children, Lynda and Christopher, and live in Lubbock, Texas. Bruce says he tried to drive by the new FarmHouse house but drifts were too deep. He received his Doctorate from VCU, taught computer and marketing classes at Virginia State University, and is currently a volunteer administrator for St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Petersburg, Va. Swanson '54 is 83 years old and spends his time driving around checking fields and keeping track of his kids and grandkids. He lives in Overton, Neb. Leroy V. Svec, Ph.D. '61 retired in 2013 from a 50+ year career as an agronomist, currently working part time in consulting and research auditing. Leroy and his wife, Patricia's, favorite pastimes are gardening, woodworking, and their grandchildren. Favorite activities include UNL athletics across the board. They live in Seward, Neb. John Wirth '66 and Fred Boesiger '66 attended the 50-year reunion of the UNL Innocents Society class of 1968-69, on May 4, 2018. The event was held in Kansas City, Mo. Fred is retired and lives near Firth, Neb. John is a retired lawyer and lives near Denver, Colo. Email: johntwirth@comcast.net Donald D. Woodburn, Ph.D. '67 participates in Adult Sunday School, men's group, and missions through his church. He is an avid reader, goes to the gym five days a week, and plays golf with friends, including pledge brother Bill Schwaner '67. Toebben '67 retired on July 1, 2018, after 12 years as president and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and 43 years in the Chamber profession. Gary was awarded an honorary doctorate of business from Pepperdine University on December 8, 2018, and gave the commencement address to the business school graduates. He and his wife, Mary, play golf regularly. Their daughter, Katy, married a FarmHouse alumnus, Alex Wilson, Oklahoma Sate '07.
