TAU TALK ALPHA TAU OMEGA AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2019 CALLING ALL INTERESTED PARTIES! House Corporation Board, Board of Trustees Look to Expand with Remote Members T he collegiate experience, in many ways, is an incubator for the "real world" and the next chapter of a student's life. In a town hall-style meeting with the undergraduates at the beginning of the semester, I relayed these sentiments and outlined a vision for them. I wanted to make serving on the Board of Trustees a natural next step as they completed their undergraduate experience and moved on to the beginning of their careers. While strength lies in numbers, I do want to reach out to our strong, existing alumni base to put the question to the masses: Can we make remote Corporation Board and Board of Trustee members a reality? I wholeheartedly believe we can. With a conference number and a bit of an infrastructure upgrade at the chapter facility, I believe we can expand our network of board members and open up new connections to Gamma Upsilon in ways we have been unable to do so before. Additionally, I want to create an even stronger potential job network for our undergraduate members. With our alumni being in a diverse arena of industry, there is a network that is being underutilized in its current capacity. Speaking as someone who interviewed at my current employer due to a connection with one of my brothers, I'm forever grateful for the opportunity it presented myself. Here's my call to action. If you have had the itch to be a mentor to someone in your respective field, had a yearning to give back to Gamma Upsilon with your time, or want to be a part of the beginning of our first generation of remote board members, I urge you to contact me to learn more and get a better understanding of the commitment. As with anything in life, this can be exactly what you want it to be! Please email me at michael.nelsonjr@gmail.com and I'd be happy to connect. Love and Respect, Michael Nelson '07 A s the Eastern Regional Vice President of TranSystems, Peter Strub '78 enjoys playing a pivotal role for a company that helps people and products efficiently get from point A to point B. Whether it be driving along a major highway, going over a big bridge, or making your way through an airport terminal, TranSystems provides architectural and engineering design plans and construction solutions to speed up your commute. "Devoting your entire career to one company is definitely an exception today, but over the past 34 years I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be part of an exciting company transformation. If I had to do it all over I could not think of a better company to work for," Peter said. "When we created TranSystems, we had approximately 200 employees and over the next two decades, we grew the company to over 1,300 employees." Peter's hard work hasn't gone unnoticed by his peers. In 2016, Peter was named as the chairman of the American Council of Engineering Companies, which represents more than 5,000 engineering companies and 600,000-plus employees on the national and international stages. Peter developed the necessary confidence to tackle such an important role even before he started working at TranSystems. Serving as the president of the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega educated Peter about leadership, understanding, compassion, and developing relationships. "I learned how to work and lead others," Peter said. "Going to school was a full-time endeavor and my experience as chapter president taught me how to prioritize and delegate issues/things to ensure that they all were accomplished." With living in South Carolina, Peter hasn't been able to stay connected with Gamma Upsilon as much as he would like. However, Peter was able to return to Ames last year for the chapter's 110th anniversary celebration. "It was great to see and interact with folks I haven't seen in nearly 40 years," Peter said. "But what was so unique is that you engaged in discussions like it was just yesterday before we all graduated. The golf was great and reminiscing of old times was definitely a highlight."
