DELTA CHI page 2 W arren "Hap" McLeod '70 didn't enjoy dorm life when he first moved to Manhattan, as coed dorms didn't exist at the time and the girls' dorms were across campus. "Dorm life wasn't much fun in my day," Hap said. "I would have done about anything to get out of the dorm." When Don Parker '70 invited Hap to join Delta Chi, it was a no-brainer for him. "I was easy pickings when Don invited me to visit," Hap said. "I stayed, of course, because of the wonderful, lifelong friendships that evolved over time." During his time living in the Delta Chi chapter house, Hap made many great memories and contributed to the brotherhood by serving as pledge counselor. One of his favorite memories came from an event organized by Dave Alexander '70 where fraternities and sororities participated in a tug-of-war competition. "The losers got dragged through a very large and deep pit of mud," Hap said. "It was great fun!" Fun events like this helped grow the bond of brotherhood that Hap still holds close to him today. He just saw Don Bentsen '69 in the San Francisco area, and his pledge class had a reunion in Manhattan about three years ago. This connection to the Delta Chi brotherhood is part of the reason that Hap chose to give back to the Securing the Future of The Delta Chi Fraternity capital campaign. The biggest reason, however, that Hap chose to give back was his connection with Tom Hunter '69, whom Hap asked his gift to be made in memory of. "Tom's friendship, humor, and steadfast support for Delta Chi, and for me, was always an inspiration," Hap said. "Rest in peace, Tom. These young fellas are doing a great job!" As for the young fellas of Delta Chi, Hap shares a piece of advice. "Find your own way but be realistic," Hap said. "Don't end up in your old age wondering what might have been; take a shot if it makes sense. The worst that can happen is failure, and I always learned far more from my failures than my successes." He said that after visiting the chapter house, he was impressed by the active members and likes the approach of using the smaller residential house as a central meeting place. Hap says that with bad press that often surrounds the fraternity experience, now is the time for brothers to give back to Delta Chi. "Fraternities have always struggled with bad press that sadly fosters some very negative attitudes in many quarters," Hap said. "Yet, I had a wonderful and valuable experience at Delta Chi." He worries that the naysayers have been gaining ground in recent years, and that someday young men might not have the same opportunities and experiences that he had. "I hope that other brothers will feel the same and remember the good times and feel an obligation to help," Hap said. He noted that even small contributions will help ensure that future generations of Delta Chi brothers get the same opportunities that alumni shared. Outside of his support of Delta Chi, Hap is the owner of a small manufacturing company that makes a variety of wood products called Mister Boardwalk. His company mainly designs modular rollout boardwalks for the beach, and thanks to the internet he sells products all over North and Central America and the Caribbean. Hap lives in Arkansas City, Kan., and can be reached at misterboardwalk1@aol.com.
