What are some of the common mistakes working moms make when changing their lifestyles and wallets to be at home with the kids? -- N.R., email Dear N.R.: Your No. 1 priority is to create an emergency fund, or as we call it at Debt-Proof Living, a "Contingency Fund." This is a pool of money you have stashed away in the event of a financial crisis -- like unemployment, a medical situation or even a busted refrigerator. When living on a single income, it is even more important to not put yourselves into a position where you are forced to run to a credit card when something goes wrong. And things will go wrong, so you have to plan on it. I suggest you need at least $10,000 that you keep in a liquid savings account. The biggest mistake women in your situation make when leaving the workplace is forgetting that they need to change their lifestyle to match their new single-paycheck status. Beth, email Hunt Everyday Cheapskate Low-cost gelding clinic set A low cost gelding clinic will be held at Tehama District Fairground in Red Bluff on Sunday, March 17. Private horse owners in need of this service are invited to participate in this event that is co-hosted by National Equine Resource Network and RVETS. The cost to horse owners who bring their horses to the clinic will be only $75, compared to an average veterinary fee of $150-300. The clinic will take a limited number of cryptorchids and hernia repairs, for an additional fee. Dr. Eric Davis, DVM of R-VETS, is volunteering his services to the community, stressing the importance of reducing the future equine population in the face of the nation's ongoing economic woes. "At a time when many horse owners are struggling just to feed their animals, we felt that providing financial assistance in this area would be one of the most important contributions we could make, not only for existing horses, but for the future" said Shirley Puga, NERNs executive director. In 2011, NERN ran a pilot program for low-cost clinics in California, gelding a total of 92 horses. Last year (2012), NERN castrated nearly 300 colts/stallions. The 200 percent increase was driven by demand for this service, which continues to grow, as word of the program spreads. NERN-sponsored gelding clinics have been held throughout California, and clinics were recently offered in the states of Washington and Nevada. At the request of horse rescues, vets and/or horse owners that have learned of this service, other western states are under consideration. NERN is committed to expanding the program and providing low cost castration services to the extent that donor and grant funding will allow. To participate in the Red Bluff gelding clinic, contact nationalequine@gmail.com or (760) 419-2462. For more information on the gelding program, or to donate, visit www.nationalequine.org. What taxpayers should know about identity theft Protecting taxpayers and their tax refunds from identity theft is a top priority for the IRS. This year the IRS expanded its efforts to better protect taxpayers and help victims dealing with this difficult issue. When your personal information is lost or stolen, it can lead to identity theft. Identity thieves sometimes use your personal information to file a tax return to claim a tax refund. Then, when you file your own tax return, the IRS will not accept it and will notify you that a return was already filed using your name and social security number. Often, learning that your return was not accepted or receiving a contact from the IRS about a problem with your tax return is the first time you become aware that youre a victim of identity theft. How to avoid becoming an identity theft victim. Guard your personal information. Identity thieves can get your personal information in many ways. This includes stealing your wallet or purse, posing as someone who needs information about you, looking through your trash, or stealing information you provide to an unsecured website or in an unencrypted email. Watch out for IRS impersonators. Be aware that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email or social media channels to request personal or financial information or notify people of an audit, refund or investigation.
