Inside... 2-3 Help Us Enter a New Era 3 Rob J. Hanson '89 4 Chapter Report SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Spring 2019 L ast year was a historic one for Sigma Chi at Kansas State. We completed our construction project and celebrated with a fantastic alumni reunion and house dedication. Of course, it gives us great pride to look upon our chapter house, and we are deeply grateful to every alumnus who helped make this dream a reality. 2019 is equally important to the future of our chapter. It's easy for one to think that because the construction and renovation work is done, so are our fundraising efforts. However, the reality is that we are left with a $1.65 million mortgage as of March 2019—a burden our undergraduate members have to po- tentially bear over the years through monthly house bill payments. In the face of a competitive fraternity environ- ment at KSU, we need to take immediate action to reduce the debt burden by paying down the mortgage. We must continue to support our fraternity and its dedication to de- veloping men of character. I am so grateful to every brother who has contributed to A New Era campaign thus far. Because of our generous donors, we are only $61,264 from our $2.7 million cam- paign goal. The finish line is in sight, and I am asking every brother who has yet to contribute to help us cross it. Gifts of every size make a difference and are greatly appreciated. Whether you can give at the donor plaque rec- ognition level of $5,000 or give $500, we need you now to bring us home! Please send in your pledge now using the envelope that is included with this newsletter. Many of you have increased your original pledge and, in some cases, have moved to the next, higher level of giv- ing. We really appreciate that as it has been a significant factor in helping us reach the current amount of commitments, $2,638,736. Your addi- tional contributions are always welcome. If you are still considering an increase in your pledge, please do so now using the enclosed envelope. What are you waiting for? The original chapter house was built several decades ago and has been home to hundreds of brothers. There is no reason why the renovated house won't last for another 100 years. Your contribution is a long-term investment that will contribute to the education of hundreds of new Sigma Chis. '63 and his wife, Jean, spend six months in Arizona and the other six months in Wisconsin. Doc still does some veterinary work and the couple has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. You can connect with Doc at wngje1@hotmail.com. Richard M. Zimmer, P.E.'68 completed a ma- jor renovation to his 40-plus-year-old Florida home, so he empathizes with the disruption to the active chapter during a rebuild. "It is amaz- ing what a Sig Sweetheart with taste, a Sig en- gineer/contractor, and a pile of greenbacks can do to transform old to new." Rick and Lynda are excited to see the photos of the house in tran- sition and say to "maintain the enthusiasm for what is to come. Looking forward to visiting for an alumni reunion." Keep in touch with Rick at kona@zccflordia.com. Devere "Robby" Dove III '75 retired in the spring of 2018 and sold his GM Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac dealership after 60 years of business in Great Bend and central Kansas. "I'm going to relax, spend more time with my wife, Trisha, and our grandchildren. I sure am looking forward to this new life! Thank you, Lord, for getting me here." Robby lives in Ellinwood, Kan. Stay con- nected with Robby at rdove1953@yahoo.com. Lawrence D. Reed, O.D. '75 still works three days a week as an optometrist. His wife, Barba- ra, has retired from her nail salon business. Their oldest son, Brian, is a police officer in Arlington, Va., Bradley is an attorney in Chicago, and Lind- say is an R.N. at Children's Mercy in Kansas City. Barb and Larry like to spend a few months of the year at their winter home just south of (Continued on page 4)
